    BeBro, stop persecuting them at once!

    (Sorbian Lusatians are autochtonic inhabitants of southern part of former DDR, Slavs, related to Poles and Czechs, but forming their own branch of Western Slavs. They've had their own national movement in XIX and XX century, but heavily repressed by Germans, especially under Hitler, who simply sent their leaders to concentration camps. Poland demanded independance for Sorbs after ww2, but abandoned them in return for accepting Odra-Nysa (Oder-Neisse) line by eastern Germans.
    As being an exclave in german territory, and under german rule for over 1000 years, less and less people speak upper and lower sorbian language.

    German authorities do not help Sorbs much: they have divided Lusatia in two lands (Brandenburg and Saxony), and continue closing sorbian schools. Some time ago some sorbian organisations made an appeal to polish president to demand from Angela Merkel help for them, but, sadly, he missed that single one opportunity to enerve Germans.

      Resistance is futile, they'll be assimilated.

      Seriously, they are probably going to fade away at some point, and hardly because of "German rule" which actually gives them a lot of special rights to protect their culture, but because they are simply too few in a population of too many non-Sorbs. As for help, what exactly do you mean? As said, they are already recognized as minority, can use their own language, have an own anthem, most public stuff in the regon is bilingual, etc. etc.....

      And if they don't have enough babies I doubt Merkel can be of help....

          I've heard that the only Sorbian native speaker who could teach biology prefers to live in Berlin.

          The Sorbians are one of the few the remainders of the "old" central European mix of Germanic and Slavic populations - where a lot of the "Germans" were (and in the former GDR are) Slavs whose ancestors learned German some day.

          Today, I think the population is too small to have an economically healthy nation, and they are even less Polish than the Dutch are German. Maybe Ecthy can clarify the issue, IIRC he is from the Sorbian Capital Chosebuz(sp?)/Cottbus.
          Why doing it the easy way if it is possible to do it complicated?

            Methinks forced deportation is the answer here. Poland keeps dumping it's population on the rest of Europe, we should ship some back

              I think Ecthy would take exception to you calling his home city Chosebuz though...although I doubt he has any objections to Stettin, Breslau and Warschau

                I never claimed they are polish. I only claim we should make all the people in Saxony and southern Brandenburg learn Lusatian, and all the people in Brandenburg, Meklemburg-Vorpommern, Sachsen-Anhalt and Schleizwig learn Polabian

                  Well in that case, West Poland should all learn German

                    I just check . . . Stettin is spelled Szczecin?!?! How do you pronounce "Szcz" in the first place?

                    In any event, having to say it that way would have really thrown Churchill off.

                        sz = sh
                        cz = ch / tch

                        so szcz = shch

                        it's really easy to pronounce when You are Polish.

                            Let's free all the peoples everywhere and divide the world into 10,000 non-self-sustaining states and see how long that lasts. Suspect the unification process would be brutal and deadly. Suspect that process would proceed nonetheless. Let's not further subdivide.

                            This is rather like the experimental game of pooling everyone's money, dividing it equally, and seeing what happens. In the latter case, those that had most of it before end up with most of it again and those that had little or none end up back there as well. (I'm told an exception must be made for inherited wealth in the context of this game, but that may be urban legend). The processes to return to that previous status are inevitable more debilitating than the processes needed to maintain that status. So why bring on nastiness to end up back in the same place.
