Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.

I think it's an easy solution. See the rankings when it comes to math, and go for the highest where you can get with that score possibly. Period. Small trade outs if music is important, but only small.
Then, the money thing will just happen. If she needs to play my trumpet, I'll got another 10 euros for her.

Math program + 31 + Guy + MIT ~ 25 percent chance.
At least that's how it works up here.

Dude, take pictures of her. I she takes her top off if you ask really nicely. Do it for the team!

Ah, Pekka.. she's a math major, do you really want a picture?
She actually got a 34 on the math portion...
And, to what Ben pointed out; a girl applying with those scores has a much better change of getting in.
I had planted the seed a few days ago that she should apply to some "reach" schools, and mentioned MIT. She thought I was nuts. They were over last night for dinner, and her and her mom were all over the idea that she apply to MIT and maybe a couple other longshots. Why not?
Anyway, when she gets into MIT I better get a t-shirt.

Yep, I remember my days in physics. 20 guys and 2 girls.
I'm sure she doesn't understand what it's like in these faculties, but it's way easier for girls to get in especially in maths.
I wish it worked the other way for history, but sadly, not the case.

My neighbor scored a 31 on her ACT and she's very active at school. She is planning on going to Ohio State, and I am concerned that the only reason she is doing this is because it is close and expected. She wants to be a Math major, and having known a few and being pretty quant oriented myself I can tell she'll be a perfect fit for it. I mentioned to her the other day that a 31 put her into a league that places her above most as far as admittance to schools go. I also suggested that she apply to MIT in math in see what happens.
Today, she acknowledged what I had told her; obviously she did her own research. I told her that I think that she should at least apply to these type of schools and see what happens. She is concerned about the price. I think that the "how do I afford it" works itself out when you really want something.
So, what other schools should she apply to? She's music oriented (no surprise) and math oriented. She wants to major in math, but I also see her wanting to be in music... thus MIT. What other schools are know for Math?
The OSU math program for undergrads is good. One of my very bright best buds from high school and her husband did the program (and became math teachers in Columbus). I think there was a full ride scholarship for my friend as well.
If you want, I can put her in touch with my friend for an informational interview.
In any event, you are right that she should be able to get into a more prestigious school -- not that OSU is anything to sneeze at these days -- but the money does vary. IMO, the money correctly is part of the equation.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
Yes, the money is an issue. However, I think the prestige and being further from home than Columbus (we're in Cincinnati) will do her good. Especially, since her sister lives there and while she's a good kid, she still behaves like a kid. And, I think this neighbor has much more potential that a place like MIT might be able to afford.
She wants to do math/comp sci. I wonder if OSU will help her become more than a teacher. I think she would like to get more information. She has a whole year to decide. We actually convinced her parents to lay off her in her senior year. You get admitted without the senior year, and they have been pushing her to be valedictorian, which she has no interest in... she just wants to be successful.
DanS, if you could pm me you friends email I will pass it on to her and she can do her due diligence in researching her choices.
Most undergrad programs at major universities are pretty much the same. More selective schools are "better" because they have better students, not better teachers.
liberal arts school (or small colleges in general) generally hve professors/etc who care a lot more about the student
I think it is a better environment for undergrad

If she wants to do math and comp sci, she should definitely NOT stay there and go to a further distance. Money shouldn't be an issue even though it always is, just work it out, that's it. If she isn't into prostitution, damn, chip in, make a small investment in her if you can afford it, it'll be like an act of superior goodness. Not saying to pay for it, that's heavy, but like, help her plan funding and stuff, pull few ropes if you can, she deserves the best option if she has the gift but no money. She will learn the greatest lesson on life this way, that if you really want it, you can get it, and when you get it, remember to return it. To have faith on people, but remember that there's a whole bunch of *******s as well.
I mean you could be like the best neighbour ever.

I doubt they are as much as the schools in the US .
