This guy, Brannon Howse is running for mayor in my town. This is his latest publicity stunt : (and yes, I will get to the thread title, it isn't misleading, just incomplete)
Okay, you're a homophobe, but I understand why you wouldn't want your 11 year old to see graphic depictions of sex, be it homo or hetero. You're on thin ice, but continue...
Dammit, you went all lunatic on me too early in your article. You're supposed to build on your lunacy, becoming progressively more insane as the piece goes on, makes it much easier to mock you.
The assistant manager told you this? You see, this doesn't make sense. It would hurt business, which could cost her her job (not to mention the mere fact of sharing such information could, regardless of payroll issues.) It is possible she cared more about the truth than her pocket book, but then why did she not speak out sooner about these problems, instead of waiting to tell you at a very opportune time for your campaign?
Once again, this assistant manager cared enough to tell you, but not the police?
Just because the store has books doesn't mean they celebrate their contents. His reporting of where such a book would be found is accurate, however. Of course, there are gay 13 year olds, shouldn't they be able to read about their sexuality?
Three places? He wasn't looking hard enough.

Your son's "innocence" is going to go away sometime. At least it happened at a time when you could discuss it with him. Not saying it's the ideal situation, it isn't, but your plan of telling him sex is bad and he wouldn't desire any carnal knowledge until his wedding night wasn't going to work out either. I'll agree there is no hate crime here (no crime, plenty of hate though.) But they should be fined? For carrying books? Given that they're a book store? And oh yeah, they do have a large children's section. Maybe you should go there instead of mucking with other people's choices.

Now, my question is, how should bookstores handle sexual material? While I feel it is the parents responsibility to watch there child, and therefore don't have any problem with it being on a shelf where a child could potentially access it, there are some legitimate concerns. Chief among them is pranksters. The websites above have stories, probably not true, but certainly plausible, of sexually explicit books being found both in the common areas of the store, and of more concern in the actual children's section. Now, the nutcases that share these stories blame the bookstore and insinuate this is done on purpose, by the store. While that is absurd, I could certainly see some teenage douche bag putting an inappropriate book in the children's section (Screw criminals, Australia should have been reserved as a place to send teenagers until they grow up.) And while the excuse of "watch your children, they're your responsibility" works for the common areas, I don't think it is unfair for a parent to expect that they can let their child browse the children's section with out looking at every book first.
So, should Barnes and Noble have sexual content on their shelves? Should there be a law to this effect? Or is it wrong to even be concerned about children seeing this sort of thing? Discuss.

On June 5th, my eleven year old son joined me in a visit to our local Barnes and Noble Bookstore in Collierville, TN. I was horrified at what my son saw. Open on a table was a very large, full-color, picture book displaying a man in full frontal nudity. The cover was two men kissing with the title GAY SEX. Here is a link to the book. Warning.

The assistant manager told me that this was the second time that night this book had been laid open in the store. She also informed me that such books were regularly found in the men's room. I believe some homosexual or child predator was trolling and using the book to find a date or victim.
The assistant manager told me a young boy had been sexually assaulted in the bathroom at this store and the man was never caught. She also said they had found a gun on the counter in the bathroom on another occasion.
My police department does not have a record of either incident which was very disturbing to a police investigator I talked with. I guess a gun in the bathroom and a sexual assault of a child would not be good publicity so not reporting it would be better? A friend of mine read my original article and called to thank me for taking this public because his elementary son has entered into this bathroom by himself a few times.
After sharing these disturbing stories with me, the assistant manger walked me to where the book was normally kept. Was it behind a counter? No, it was on the top shelf of a bookcase that any 13 year old could reach. Welcome to the 21st Century where being gay is mainstream and celebrated as normal in a family bookstore. I returned to the Barnes and Noble the next day to document the placement of their pornographic books. I have three places where books that included pictures of either homosexual porn or heterosexual porn were placed throughout their bookshelves. One section of books was low enough that my five year old could have pulled them from the shelf.
Collierville, TN does not have an ordinance that requires this type of material to be behind a counter out of reach of children or moved into a restricted area that requires a person to be 18 or older to enter.
This is one more example of where elected officials have the opportunity to implement public policy that protects the innocence of our children as well as accounts for their physical safety. You can bet I will be working for such a city ordinance as well as working to make sure state law 39-17-911 is enforced and there is a penalty for robbing my son's innocence.
I am working with the American Family Association to have an e-mail go to 3 million people calling for a boycott of Barnes and Nobel until they put this garbage behind a counter or in a restricted area where children can not see it or have access to it.
This story has now gone nation wide through my national radio program, my 30 minute appearance on the Michael Reagan program (son of President Ronald Reagan) as well as being a guest on the local program of Mike Fleming.

Yet another person running for a position of power who has no idea what a hate crime is.
