So you think the U.S. should have gone to war with a nuclear power, since China planned to intervene if the U.S. invaded the North?
More historical inaccuracy. Intelligence uncovered after the war tells us that China actually had NO plans to intervene. Figures, too, as Vietnam and China are historically enemies and even fought a war as recently as 1979 (on a related side note, isn't it funny how Communist countries kept fighting each other, while the Western democracies did not??). Now, at the time, we THOUGHT China would intervene, which is part of the reason we didn't invade. An invasion of the North following Tet would have been easily justified and successful, though.
As for China, it's unfortunate we didn't collaborate with the Soviets back in 1963 to either keep them nuclear free or blow them back to the Stone Age. The Soviets were even more wary of them than we were - back to the old commie vs commie animosity thing again
That's what we thought after the war. About ten years ago China revealed that it had every intention of intervening in the North if the U.S. expanded their invasion of Indochina to North Vietnam. The Soviets were also not going to sit idly by, but I don't think they'd have sent ground troops.
You forget, in the 1960s, Mao was still alive, and he was an internationalist. The Cultural Revolution was in full swing, and they wouldn't have allowed the government to watch a fellow Socialist state to be attacked by the imperialists an do nothing. Vietnam and China's troubles recently only began after the death of Mao and the seizure of power by the Dengist clique.
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

Something to do with the all those murdered after they took over. The first few year of peace in SE Asia was deadlier than the previous twenty years of war.

That sounds like a pretty amazing claim, given that ~1 million or more Vietnamese died during our involvement in the war, no?
I'll certainly buy into the guy being a skillful general. I am also sympathetic to the cause of self-determination... I think the US made a big mistake in taking over for the (beaten) French. Didn't Ho Chi Minh approach us looking for support right after WWII, citing our revolution as precedent? edit: he cited the Atlantic Charter, apparently. Obviously the guy wasn't all warm & fuzzy (he killed off a bunch of opponents), but it's not like the group we picked to back was any better. Best choice was to stay out.
I don't know much concerning the details of the communist takeover of the South after our withdrawl. I doubt it was pretty. Che loves it, of course, because everyone who was hurt or killed was clearly a dirty capitalist pig who had it coming. Meh.

And the Vietnamese (the ones left) want it that way.

Are you not laughing because you found it unfunny, or because you didn't understand the joke. If I take your last post literally, I'd say you didn't understand it.
