I think it'd be hilarious if Obama did have a relative that served in the Red Army.

That'd just burnish his global credentials, right?

He mixed up his concentration camps and said uncle instead of great-uncle. A mistake, yes. Egg on his face? Some, sure.

If you're going to tell a family story to pander to a specific group of people, the least you should do is get it right. With bloggers listening and reporting everything that seems to be said, it seems prudent to pay attention. Or it's the ole egg on the face with no one to blame but yourself. Not the sort of thing you want when you're selling NEW, CHANGE, and NOT A typical lying politician.

No, it's not what you want. Boo, ok? I still prefer him to Hillary or McCain. Has John learnt the difference between Sunnis and Shiites yet?

This is Barrack Obama, he has a cadre of people whose only job is to fact check this stuff. "Uncle" and "Auschwitz" were diliberatly chosen because people know about that/can relate to that. If you said Buchenwald the story would have lost is "point" because most of those at the rally wouldn't have a clue of the significance of the site.

That said, the basic gist of his story is correct, but it is funny watching people trip over themselves to excuse Obama's attempt make up a more user friendly version of himself. If the story wasn't compelling in its true light, that should tell you something.

That doesn't change the point that it was a pathetic and amazingly unsuccessful pander in the first place. So what if his uncle was present at Auschwitz?

Switching it to Auschwitz and hoping nobody would notice is even dumber than just making a mistake/misremembering.

He has had such a good track record of changing his personal history beyond any resemblance to reality in the past with his fanatics not giving as ****, why would he expect this to be any different?

I fully expect to discover he also invented the internet before the month is out.

Is it funnier that people are defending him because the jist and sentiment of the statement is correct, or is it funnier that republican sleezebags are jumping all up over it like it is a massive lie?

                        the latter is true, assuredly.

And yes, everyone does it, but it's getting harder to get away with and I don't think politicians quite get that yet. There are more ears listening these days.

And normally I shrug most of it off and just laugh, but Obama is selling a package that doesn't include this type of behavior and it looks worse on him. Heck I expect Hillary to be a lying B**** and McCain to flip flop on items that cost him previously with the electorate.

Obama is selling a higher standard but doesn't seem to live up to it himself.

Democratic supporters seem to indicate that they are, you know, Democrats first . My point is why should I care if the Dems rip each other apart and open the door for McCain. I actually like McCain and may vote for him over Obama, so I'm not exactly scared about it.

And despite all my comments I like Obama. Unfortunately he's a little too far out on the left for me and the Republicans actually put up a candidate that doesn't make me ill.
