I learned how to type on a typewriter and had one given to me before I went to college but I got a computer shortly afterwards. I absolutely hated the rotary telephone

Have never used a typewriter: wrote with a pen in school and in the U. We had two maroon ebonite rotary phones at home back in the 80s. Still have them stashed away somewhere, probably.

That's also the reason for the Qwerty keyboard. It's specifically designed to slow down the typist to keep the keys from jamming.

            Hmm, born in 1981.

I was taught typing in school with the electric ones. After that they had keyboards.

Used to always practice when I was at my grandparent's house. I've had to use it when I worked in an office, to type up donor cards and update them. Really old school. I never thought it would come in handy so quickly.

Rotary phones? Used them until I was about 11 or 12. Then we got the touch ones.

There is the inherent slow down, but I thought the main benefit being that if keys that are next to each other aren't typed consecutively then the trajectories of the tines are less likely to cross - so even if you typed at the same speed the risk of jamming is significantly less.

My logic being that if the speed of the typist were the main issue you just learn to type slower.

I've used both. I'm okay with them, even though I usually don't support antiquated technology, like fax machines.

Seriously, scanning+email beats fax machines, hands down.

We have both in my office. Our printers are significantly better than our fax machines, so we can actually read the documents e-mailed to us.

I remember back in about 5th grade (mid-60s), my class went on a field trip to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. One of the "high-tech" hands-on displays was a touch-tone phone next to a rotary model. There was a stopwatch-style clock (analog, of course) so you could time how long it took to dial a call on each. A 7-digit number took about 20+ seconds to dial on a rotary.

Sometimes the point of sending by fax is to be deliberately illegible. Especially if you've faked a signature.

                            Fair enough

I'm not sure I understand why people use fax machines anymore... just use a fax-to-email service, faster and better, if you have to use something fax-like...
