$10 says Asher won't agree with Agathon's statement... it's too philosophical

        Bingo

Anyone who uses "Procrustean" in an off-topic casual forum needs to be banned. He's trying too hard.

Only reason he used it was because in his next sentence he dismisses "simpletons", so it sets up the fake contrast that he is an intellectual while others are simpletons.

I'm pretty sure I could write an algorithm that could post Agathon's posts for him, they're formulaic.

He'd have to be capable of understanding it to be able to agree or disagree with it in any meaningful sense. So I guess the bet can't be resolved. Sucks that you're down ten bucks because of it. I've always thought that the afflicted should be of some use to society.

I don't think you thought this post out very well...doesn't follow.

Imran makes a solid point: even if it's not your taste, you have to recognize that it could be a gem. I have this debate with my friends often regarding music.

Asher is right, this is just incorrect logic. If Asher can't agree with your statement, then he clearly won't, and so snoopy is actually up ten bucks.

Party 3 of The Globe's GTAIV diary

GTA IV Diary, Day Three: Cops 'n' Crooks

Much like cell phones of the real world, the mobile handset provided players in Grand Theft Auto IV is an indispensable luxury.

As one might expect, it allows players to contact any of the characters they know in the game at the touch of just a couple of buttons. This is very handy if you want to, say, schedule a date, arrange a time to pick up a pal to go to a show, or set up some work of either the straight or crooked variety.

And, of course, the phone receives calls and text messages, too. This is, in fact, the primary means by which the game's narrative trudges forward. Whenever a colleague or friend is being chased, beaten, or needs you to hurt someone, they call you to solicit help and the next chapter of the story begins.

So far it sounds like GTA IV's mobile serves the same purpose as the wireless phones in our non-gaming lives; it keeps us in touch with all of the people we know. However, it does have one bit of functionality almost certainly not contained within the handset you carry in your pocket or purse: It can initiate epic sessions of multiplayer mayhem.

Grand Theft Auto IV provides a wealth of online modes, a first for the series' console-based games. And, after scrolling through my phone's menu and selecting the multiplayer option, this is the part of the game in which I lost myself during my third night of play.

The first type of game I tried was a race, which involved driving through crowded streets from checkpoint to checkpoint at breakneck speeds. Needless to say, rules of the road were ignored, and smooshed pedestrians were the unfortunate consequence. I placed tenth, which made the deaths of all those bystanders I'd run over seem something of a shame. Perhaps I would have felt differently had I won.

The next mode I tried was Cops ‘n' Crooks, which randomly sorted players into teams of good guys and bad guys. As a crook, my job was to protect my boss as he tried to make his way through the city to a getaway vehicle. My team started out as masked men in suits running as a group. It felt very much like a heist movie; I had the impression that I was part of a crew of professional, organized criminals following a strategic escape plan. Then the black and whites showed up and it turned into a chaotic, every-burglar-for-himself fracas. Our boss went down in a hail of bullets, Bonnie and Clyde-style, beside a car.

As the night progressed I experimented with several other online modes. I was part of a group of thugs stealing cars. I got involved in a turf war the goal of which was to take control over as much of the city as possible. And I tried (unsuccessfully) to escort a mafia boss from the airport through a city swarming with cops and feds.

There are 15 modes in total, and while most are simply variations on a theme, they do offer up a nice variety, and add significant value to a single-player game that, for the record, isn't exactly lacking longevity.

It's also worth noting that multiplayer is the only area of the game in which players can take on the role of women.

It was refreshing to play against human controlled opponents for a while. However, I found that by the end of the night I was starting to miss all of the artificially intelligent bad seeds I'd befriended in the single-player portion of the game. When I play tonight, I think I'll whip out my cell phone and call my Jamaican drug dealer pal Little Jacob. It's been too long since last we took in a magic show at the Perestroika Club on Tulsa Street.

I don't want to read that diary, cuz I plan to buy the game now. Is it a good diary?

                    • It's not really full of spoilers. It's basically what the guy is up to in the game, from a non-typical gamer. Gives a feel for the stuff you can do in the game.

                      • Soon as I saw he said he was going on dates with some chick, I stopped reading. Thats the type of game innovation I like to discover.

                        • I killed my date accidentally by rolling my car the first time. ***** didn't buckle up, I guess.

It's kind of weird, going out with women...

                            • 'least not yet.

I recently played Bully and had lots of man-on-man action (and even got the "Over the Rainbow" achievement for kissing 20 boys), but not so in GTA4 so far.
