Beside all that, it is painful/uncomfortable having to leave your brain at the doorstep when you shop there.

Walmart employees are predominately untalented, uneducated, unintelligent, or too old to do anything but utter monosyllabic greetings as people walk through the door. The idea they should be able to unite and work together is just frightening. It would be like Planet of the Apes.
Let us look at some of what these winners have to say on the 'Walmart-Blows' employee forum:
I was working walmart in Jasper Alabama ... when i got ready to leave the doors were locked .. because they said there was a tornado warning issued ... I told the greeter that i was going to leave any way ...he got a manager that said i could not leave ... i promptly told him i was going to leave after i kicked hes arss and busted out the doors ... he must have believed me....and i meant it because he opened the doors ...and me and about 25 other people left while they cheered me ...
In my store we're supposed to herd everyone into Electronics, because it's centrally located and therefore "safe."
I figure if we ever get a significantly serious warning, I am placing myself directly below the largest wall-mounted display television.

Could someone explain to me the reason for Wal-Mart hate? Other than all the crappy Chinese products they sell, I don't really see a reason for it.
Wall-Mart encourages waist by selling cheap stuff for almost nothing, they drive out small businesses with unbeatable prices, they hold companies by their balls because they managed to screw them by controlling 90% of their production
I hope they are paying you for the advertising!
I like Walmart! I don't see how thrift = waste.
Waiving taxes and such is common for large stores and other things that will bring in significant jobs/expansion to the economy (sometimes warranted, sometimes not). It's certainly not unique to Wal-Mart, though.
That's been the case here, many many folks have a job because of Walmart.

When I was in the states, the lady at Walmart could tell me not only whether they had something in stock, but when the shipment was due. I've yet to see that service anywhere else up here in Canada.

True that it's not limited to Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart doesn't create jobs though. It drives out middle-class mom&pop places and replaces their work with low-paying jobs.
How is it bad for Wal-Mart to give its employees lessons on applying for government programs that they qualify for? I think that's a great idea.
I see your point, but I think it'd be better if Wal-Mart complesated its workers enough so they wouldn't have to go on the government dole.
More than likely you're mostly talking about part-time workers. Wal-mart pays its full time workers enough 'not to have to go on the dole' except if they have many children - which some do, and is certainly not Wal-Mart's fault...

If you want less efficient stores, fewer jobs, and arbitrarily high salaries for morons who stock shelves, move to North Korea. There is just no way "mom&pop" stores employ more people than Walmart.

Yes and some mom and pop stores aren't driven out of town by Wal-Mart. What's your point, Z? This concern for buisinesses that fail to compete is worrying.

It's quite likely that (net local revenue including wages from mom+pop stores before walmart) < (net local revenue from walmart including wages) + (net local rev. from m+p stores after walmart), actually. Mom and Pop stores typically make quite small profits, and 'wages' are often just their profits. The fact that Wal-Mart has much better profit margins can lead to increased local revenue (tax revenue + wages), especially when you consider that people from other towns will start shopping there.
That is of course ignoring the other benefit (cheaper goods for the locals)...

It's concern for businesses that pay taxes...unlike Wal-Mart. It's concern for a level playing field.
