  • Almost 10% of Americans on food stamps.

It's shameful that a country like the US has policies which mean the working poor cannot even afford enough food to survive.

You say that, but then we have policies that give them the food they need to survive...

What is left of our safety net exists despite Republican efforts to destroy it.

In a year when more Americans then ever need food stamps just to have enough food to eat Bush is attempting to gut billions from the program:

And in the FY 2006 budget Republicans also savaged the food stamp program saying it was wasteful and unneeded.

Literally tens of billions in cuts. It's savage.

Not in 2005 (for the 2006 budget) when $16.5 billion was cut and those in hunger can thank their lucky stars that Congressional Democrats will try to block Bush's 2008 budget which repeats the attempt to savage food aid.

Right, they control it NOW. So Bush can't savage anything, unless they agree to it in order to keep their pork rolling.

Anyone want to make a bet about the winner in the battle between AFDC and Pork in the Democratic party?

You do realize that Democrats have restored the pay as you go rule, right? No new spending is authorised unless there are offsetting cuts or tax increases to pay for it. That's a vast improvement over the Republicans continually savaging social services & education while blowing up the budget on pork, corporate give aways, and pay offs to corporate farms.

Things should be better. No one in America should be hungry. It may get worse.

Whether this is shameful or not totally depends on the threshold for getting food stamps, does it not.

the threshold is not very low, thanks to the gutted safety net Oerdin speaks of.

And why is using the safety net we pay for shameful? Will it be shameful to use national healthcare if it becomes a reality?

I could go on how a good portion of the food stamp members are no doubt driving SUVs and wearing designer clothes, but I don't want Oerdin's head to explode

NEWSFLASH! 100% of our over 60 citizens are on social security! America can do better

Are you stoned?! If they have food stamps then they can afford food.

                          Ah...too true, unfortunately.

This is a major reason I will no longer work for, or contribute to, a vast majority of the organized charity organizations. One too many times did I show up to "help" this "destitute" family that was living in a bigger house than mine with more cars and designer clothes. Yet they needed charity?

True. Food stamps are abused a lot. They are a much needed program though. Too often they are used to get cash for crack and things like that. What is badly needed is a system where people have to go to a certain place to get food and they have a deduction made from their account. That would make it much harder for people to sell their kids food for drugs or new TVs.

Anyone who quotes Jeff Cafferty without laughing, or looks at Jeff Cafferty without vomiting, is subhuman and should be thrown into some sort of leftist pacifist douche bag lock box.

LET'S TALK FACTS OERDIN. If you're on food stamps you're useless. These people need to quit whining about not having jobs when they have no college degree and a big ego, that they are somehow entitled to bag my crap at Safeway. Many of these people on food stamps are known gangsters and sex offenders, and it would be fitting for them to starve to death with the raccoons as they hide out in the garbage cans of the successful, trying desperately to steal their identity or at least wireless internet before time runs out on their conniving stomaches.
