I know that this is a common thread for me. But we haven't had one in a month (or more) so...

Basically, I have been lifting weights 3 times a week for the last 6 weeks. Well, 3 of those weeks I only did the Monday/Wednesday weights cause I was sick or something. I have been trying to do high weight, and 3 sets of 4-8 reps at the higher weight. Earlier this year I was doing extremely low weight and high rep.

Monday I have been doing machines, focusing on chest (2 exercises), back (2 exercises), and shoulders (1 exercises). I haven't had real improvement in my lat pulldowns (145 lbs I can't do 8 of) but my decline is 196 lbs and incline is 148 lbs.

Wednesday I have been doing legs of all sorts. I haven't really put a lot of focus on this, except to make sure I get both sides of upper legs and work the legs out.

Friday I have been doing dumbells, focusing on arms and stabilizers (1x chest/back/shoulder/bicep/tricep). I was very happy 10 days ago when I got up to 60 lbs for dumbell press, but a couple of days ago I couldn't get to 65 lbs (I might be close). My bicep curl is a poor 25 lbs or something.

Anyways, I have gotten a decent ammount of countering advice. One peice is to do alternate weeks of low rep and high rep. Another is to do a bunch of high rep again (to define the muscles). Another peice of advice is to start doing just bench/squat/deadlift and go for max weight.

Anyone have any thoughts? Should I stay with what I am doing for a couple more weeks and see if there is more improvement? I was really frustrated with the lack of improvement last fall (I was stuck at 55 lbs dumbell press for forever) but not sure what to do now.

That reads more like a convoluted strategy for a competition than something you'd do to actually feel better and have fun.

My advice is to get a job as a mailman. They'll pay you to do all of those things and you don't need to keep score of anything. Just deliver the mail, and enjoy your good night's rest.

I am not really looking to have fun. I am looking to stay healthy/become fit/look better in a minimum amountof time per week.

Which is looking to be ~4 hours. Maybe I should increase this to get where I want to be faster though.

If I just wanted to remain healthy, I would work out like 2 hours per week. (30 minutes weights, 90 minutes cardio)

There is something to what Winstin says, namely that it is often best not to focus excessively (my new less harsh term for 'obsess' since my ex love mate claims I'm too harsh, she can choke on one) on meeting these criteria because it might start seeming like work and you won't do it -- I mean Jon who gets sick three times in six weeks and has to call off exercise - deluding yourself may be another symptom of this regimen; my advice is to get an iPod, and one of those lit mirrors that makes you look like you're in a nightclub and a bit hotter than you may actually be -- keep up a regular structure, but don't beat yourself up over an arbitrary schedule -- and you will feel and look better in no time.

The being sick was mostly due to feeling weak after giving blood. It wasn't a 'being sick' due to chance/whatever.

I haven't been sick in a standard way in a long time.

In August when I gave blood I fainted (at the gym the next day), went to ER, was put on iron, and had tons of tests performed on me. I was given the OK to give blood again but was told to not lift weights for a long period of time afterwards.

Unfortunately you need a lifestyle change, not a quick fix. Now personally I am naturally stocky so I don't concentrate on doing a lot of weight stuff - I tend to do more cardiovascular - this evening I cycled 5km, rowed 2.5km and then ran 10km...trust me, doing that a few times a week chews through one hell of a lot of energy and makes me fit and feel healthy. I've never really seen the fascination of getting all big and bulky...

Umm, PH, I have made a significant lifestyle changes, as mentioned in other threads. I have been exercising regularly for 2 years now, I eat almost no unhealthy fats, and I don't eat high carbs (Generally). I make sure my calories are between 1900 and 2300 most days. I rarely drink alcohol, and when I do I don't have more then a couple. I have made bigger lifestyle changes then most body builders.

I need to do the cardiovascular, but I have also always been a weakling. If I want to change that I have to lift weights and focus on it.

If I don't lift weights, after not a lot of time I get to the point where I struggle to bench 90 lbs.

One thing is that cycling 5km, rowing 2.5km, and jogging 10km, is going to take a lot of time in an evening.

Well my emphasis has been completely different, due to my build. One of the problems I have now is the amount of flabby skin I have left behind although that should reabsorb. But I've always been quite 'fleshy' so it is very hard for me to lose any more of my fat now.

I admit that it probably shouldn't, but I still dream of finding a nice girl at some point.

In all honesty, I consider this fitness thing every now and then. It just seems so exhausting that I never quite get around to it.

I'm okay as far as my body weight/fat but I get winded easily. The constant stream of smoke to the lungs is probably the cause.

Wait a minute, I have just had a thought. If men like to look at themselves in the mirror or naked, doesn't this make them at least a little gay? Many times I have seen people look at themselves and say, I am one sexy animal. Perhaps they are all gay ho mos.

Training and physical exercise can help you to find a nice girl, (and I don't speak about love here, just dating). But, IMO, if you want to meet a nice girl, you'll mainly have to work on your confidence. I don't speak about being a douchebag... but just having confidence.

Physical exercise can be a part of it... but working on confidence is mainly a psychological process.

And if you want to find, the almighty love, that's another issue...
