I've actually decided to drop 10 pounds myself and gave weight lifting a rest until I reach that goal. I got up to 185 pounds back in December and started getting a little pudge around my belly. I did a BMI calculation (I'm 6'0") and realized I'm now classified as overweight.

Started doing 5 miles on an inclined jogging machine for 5 days a week. It's better than a tread mill and I'm able to burn around 670 calories in an hour. So far I'm down to 180 pounds. 5 more to go and then it's back to toning the body.

BMI doesn't mean a whole lot, BF% does.

Lifting actually helps with fat loss.

Yeah, I think I'll probably go back to my regular weight lifting routine. I just weighed myself after a week and a half and I'm 178.

Just wondering what are other people's thoughts on BMI. People often say it's not very good measurement system for weight lifters.

It's not good for anyone who's even mildly athletic.

Your typical rower or swimmer is classified as obese, that's all you need to know about BMI.

BMI is nonsense...it places me as overweight. According to that I would have to weigh about 9-10stone to be normal weight. I once weighed that much in my adult life and I looked emaciated - it is because I am stocky and am quite muscularly built. It places me as overweight despite the fact I have a 32" waist and a BF% in the teens.

I don't think it's an efficient way to loss weight although after you build up bulk you can lose whatever you have pretty quickly.

Anyway, good for all of you who regularly excercise. I usually walk. That works for me since I'm not very fat so I don't need to lose much.

What is your goal with lifting weights and what kind of equipment do you have access to? I have a few years experience in different strength training environments including gyms with different purposes such as rehabilitation, general fitness, sports specific training, bodybuilding and strength sports such as olympic style weightlifting and powerlifting.

I'll be happy to help anyone who's interested and absolutely won't try to sell any absolute truth or dogma which the gym business is absolutely crowded with, if you took the advice of every self proclaimed guru out there you'd have to wade through a sea of information rubbish.

I currently have access to a Gold's Gym, with machine weights/dumbells/barbells (lots) + exercise classes and all sorts of other stuff. It is the best nonUniversity gym I have been to, but I haven't been to many.

I want to build muscle, at least some. Not sure how much. I want to look good. I want to reach some goals (bench press my weight + do dumbbell press of 85 lbs + run 3 miles in <24 minutes + run 5 miles in <60 minutes). I want to have exercise and physical exertion come easily (not get tired when I do things). I want to have more stamina.

This thread reminds me I have to set it up so I can work at the workout building at the place I work. I've got a belly and want to purge it, but I'm so asthmatic that I'll prolly just power walk/run on the treadmills.

I've done quite well myself. I certainly have a lot of strength and I can do the running 5 miles in <60 minutes (10km (just over 6 miles) took me about 53 minutes on Sunday, but I've been tired this week so I have not been able to run that far, just 6km in just over 30 minutes). As for the faster 3 miles in 24 minutes, well I am a bit short of that, but not by much...

I got to 3 miles in 24 minutes 6 years ago, and then pulled back on the exercise a lot. I think I could lift less then than I can now, so it was a different form of better in shape (I haev focused on more on weights this time).

I really wish I had a workout partner, as that helps you push yourself better generally.

I could probably do 5 miles in <60 minutes within a month if I pushed myself for it. I probably won't though (as I am still focused on the weights).

I saw you were sick from giving blood, not from actually being sick.

Light workouts are actually pretty good on days where you are sick.

Yeah, I have given blood like 4 times. The first two times I was fine after, I even drank alcohol worked out right after and felt nothing bad (not even greater drunkiness).

The third time, I went to lift weights the next day and passed out. I had apparently not replenished my blood supply and was dehydrated. I had eaten less then usual though.

This last time I skipped a workout and went light on another one, and still felt tired/etc for about a week, maybe more.
