Historically Great Britain has made substantial investments in the US. Prior to WW1 the British made more money from US investments than it did from India. During the first world war Britain's domestic economy suffered greatly, in 1916 britain asked the US for assistance. Wilson demanded the the British sell off their public and private US investments before he would give aid to Great Britain. After the war British investment in the US resumed and bloomed at a rapid rate, as British capitalists feared the rising demands of the Labor party for the nationalization of industry. During WW2 again, the US required that British investments in the US be liquidated before aid from the US treasury would be given.
So, no, the Britsh do not own the US. We have twice over liquidated their interests in the US.
