And what good is an updater if it never checks for updates? That leaves you exposed to security vulnerabilities...
Or, if you simply do not know how to ignore things or are against it on principle, you can check manually.
There's absolutely no reason to whine here, they give you both options.
Also the difference betwen what M$ is doing and Apple is that M$ is updating programs that you already have whereas Apple is putting a new program via an "update". That is just bad practice and might actually cost Apple, since consumers might not be forgiving of this episode.
