I'm one of those "young people" who would be disillusioned were she to be the nominee.

So much so that instead of traditionally voting third-party, like I normally do, or voting Democrat for the first time, for Obama, I'd vote Republican for the first time. For McCain.

In a way, I want Hillary to win the nomination. That way, I can laugh at my idealism and clear my head of Obama's hope-aid, and vote for someone who will continue the sordid mess that is Washington's business--albeit with a less gristle than the Clintons.

Caveat: this also depends on how hateful I find McCain's running mate. Romney and Huckabee are right out.

I was amused by SlowwHand's dream of a Powell-Rice ticket. I can't think of a combo that would be less appealing to me.

Yep! She is experienced alright! But hey...she is the first woman to be a "viable" candidate...and she was married to the first black President.

All that must mean that she is more qualified than Obama.

                        • Obama is all fluff and no contetnt. He wouldn't know what to do with foreign policy. Excuse me if I don't care about domestic.

                          • He personally might not, but it turns out that historically past "experience" doesn't seem to count much for the job. Neither Lincoln nor Eisenhower had much of it.

Then again, Obama seems to be hiring experts in their field based on credentials rather than loyalty or political leanings--for the financial side of things, he's hiring those in behavioral economics, for instance.

As far as the legislation argument wrt Hillary, Obama's track record is actually not as sparse as they would have you believe--he's placed many a bill on the Senate floor, and unlike Hillary, he's had cosponsors from both sides of the aisle--which actually means some of his get passed. Admittedly, they're a bit more broad and visionary rather than procedural, but isn't that a nice quality to have in a leader?

Then there's the civil libertarian bit that he's got going for him. While he was a state senator, he worked for a year on a law that required all police interrogations to be recorded. Law and order Republicans and the police opposed it from the start, but over time, Obama managed to convince enough of them that this was in their best interest--and managed to get it passed.

So, *shrugs*. Believe what you will from the talking points.

The Chicago Tribune did a story about her political contributions during her husband's Presidency. They concluded that the only meaningful contribution she made was a speech in China about women's rights. The Clinton camp has struggled to define the "Hillary legacy", but there is little substance behind the assertion that her tenure as First Lady was meaningful in any way.

Barack Obama's time in the Illinois state legislature is probably more valuable experience in government than being the First Lady. He has been a government official longer than she has.
