While that is true, it's also true that if the Middle East didn't have oil, we wouldn't be in Iraq. Oil is the ultimate reason we are there, even it isn't for the crude stealing of oil that many on the liberal left seem to think.

        Why not?
Well it's just as constructive if I were to call you a dirty hippy, a pollyanna, fellow traveller, etc.

If you really want to engage a supposed neo-con in debate then I suggest you figure out why they believe what they do.

Oh and for curiousity, where do I fit?

gulf war 1 probably would have happened regardless. It's easy to get a rise out of the international community by declaring another country your 19th province and annexing it by force. With gulf war 1 established I don't see why it would be likely that the current administration would have seen the situation any differently in the absence of oil. If anything the invasion probably would have occurred even earlier because of no risk of the invasion interrupting oil supplies.

Do you people realize there are at least 500 threads on this forum over the last 4 years on this exact same braincell-killing topic?

Does boredom ever set in for this crowd?

There is life beyond Iraq and the 'war'.
Here is an interesting scenario to check out. The Vietnam war is cool.

presumably we didn't take part in them. I suppose you oppose discussion of history in general since there are zero historically significant events that haven't already been discussed to death?

The very fact that huge number of people try to figure out "the real reason US went to war" demonstrates that going to Iraq was a mistake.

Is it worth the accelerated premature aging of your brain just to do your part in moaning about the USA's efforts to fight Islamic radicals?

Here's a simple formula you may be able to relate to:

A = damage to brain from natural aging of an average, underutilized and over-stressed brain

T = hours spent each day on off-topic forums talking about boring political issues

I = hours spent each day on off-topic forums talking about why the US invaded Iraq

                      A x T(10th power) x I(1000th power) = loss of your braincells each day

discussing or contemplating just about anything retards brain atrophy. Passive activities are the sort that do nothing to ****** it.

                        • and where is X?

X = discussing on off topic forum about a simple formula describing loss of your braincells each day due to Iraq war discussion

does it bother you that "the beacon of freedom and democracy" is killing innocent people (collateral damage while targeting the valid military targets) and causing mass destruction like this
Fallujah sometimes transliterated as Falluja or Fallouja) is a city in the Iraqi province of Al Anbar, located roughly 69 km (43 miles) west of Baghdad on the Euphrates. Fallujah dates from Babylonian times and was host to important Arab academies for many centuries. The city grew from a small town in 1947 to a pre-war population of about 435,774 inhabitants in 2003 According to UN Data but According to the Former regime there about 600 thousand inhabitants. The current population is unknown but estimated at over 25,131, with approximately 300 sunni immigrants arriving monthly from Baghdad. Within Iraq, it is known as the "city of mosques" for the more than 200 mosques found in the city and surrounding villages. The Iraq American War has reportedly damaged 80% of the city's buildings, with 50% totally destroyed including 60 of the city's mosques.

in the world for no particular reason?

or do you think it's teh terrorists.. so if you do good for you and enjoy growing the extra braincells by abstaining from brain damaging discussion and why even bother to post in this thread???

if yes... well than bring on the discussion...

The width of the Persian Gulf is largely irrelevant. Iran has more than a thousand patrol craft, capable of carrying missiles, explosive and mines. They have subs, light aircraft, land based missiles and, presumably, special forces capable of attacking oil terminals.

If Iran wants to prevent oil traffic in the Gulf, that's what's going to happen. The US can hurt them while they do it. But we probably can't stop them.

Twenty days after the bombings, Uday Hussein (son of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein) praised Osama Bin Laden as "an Arab and Islamic hero."[5] Later, Richard A. Clarke, a top Clinton administration counterterrorism official, stated that one source reported that bin Laden had met with Iraqi officials who "may have offered him asylum" after the embassy bombings.[6]

Hmm, so Saddam's son, NOT Saddam, praised Osama. And a single source said Osama met with Iraqi officials. Was it the same source that claimed Atta met with Iraqis in Prague? Was it the same source that told us where the mobile biological weapons trucks were parked?

                              Please.

                              • OBL's reasons for 9/11 was the American (non-muslims) presence in Saudi Arabia (the holy country for muslims).

The presence of the Americans (and english) was needed to contain Saddam Hussein. Reports after the war showed that SH didn't had WMD but had the intention to start building them again after the Americans/English would have left the regio.

The Americans were needed to contain Iraq and protect SA and the no-fly zones in north and south iraq (to protect the Kurds and Quweit).

For 12 years no progress was made regarding Iraq and SH. This couldn't take forever, and got new urge since OBL and Al Qa'ida and the muslims community in general kept becoming more angered at the American presence in SA.

Thus the solution was either deal with SH to be able to end the American presence on the long term (that's years, not months), or leave the ME without containing SH and wait till hell breaks loose again.

This is the main and most important reason for invading Iraq. And it is a good reason. Even now when the problems apparantly didn't get solved within a short time, there's still good hope that it'll be solved on the long term.

Not to mention that the current war in Iraq would've started anyway once SH would have been died from natural causes. Any nation that consists of different ethnical groups that's being leaded by a brutal dictator falls into a domestic war after the dictator is gone. Even more if the ethnical groups hate each other and the dictator has favored a minority group.

Keeping the Status Quo would have been the most stupid thing to do. It's the leftish answer to everything: "Let's not move, maybe the problem will be solved automaticly". A retarted way of thinking.
