Focusing on consuming less toxins is not going to get rid of the toxins that I've built up, and I'm not sure if my liver works all that well. I used to party a lot and I've done a lot over the years which is very bad for the liver.

      Read LS's post again

Your liver will do that for you - and is the only thing that is going to 'detox' you in any event. Unless you have entered liver shutdown (you'd be in a hospital and told you have weeks to live), the only things that will remove toxins are your liver and kidneys. 'Detoxing' is a fancy way of saying stopping putting toxins into your body entirely for a few days, and usually taking some crap that does nothing but makes you feel better mentally for having taken it.

Why would you just depend on your liver? The liver can wear itself out like a car. The more you use it the faster it's going to wear out. I'm considering this to make my liver healthier, as well as get rid of dangerous toxins that can cause all kinds of bad health.

            Basic science says it's retarded.

Professor Alan Boobis OBE, Toxicologist, Division of Medicine, Imperial College London states that "The body’s own detoxification systems are remarkably sophisticated and versatile. They have to be, as the natural environment that we evolved in is hostile. It is remarkable that people are prepared to risk seriously disrupting these systems with unproven ‘detox’ diets, which could well do more harm than good."[4]

There is also criticism that detox diets in general are unhealthy due to the possibility of a greater amount of natural toxic chemicals in fruits and vegetables than in animal products.[citation needed] It is argued by advocates of this perspective that the liver has evolved to do its job without assistance from such diets.

What the hell is going on - Wiglaf is being amazingly coherent, and correct!

I am going to echo LordShiva. Ignore this detox bollocks, that's what you have a liver for, and a kidney for disposing of the crap the liver has detoxified. I get really annoyed with this kind of quackery that is doing the rounds. The only thing anything like "detox" you should employ is ensuring you eat plenty of fibre to keep your gastrointestinal tract clean and healthy.

Actually, I saw a show about it on PBS this morning. Well not fasting, but about toxins. We can't just depend on our body system to get rid of all our toxins. There are too many toxins getting in these days. We are overworking our system.

The liver is the most remarkable piece of biochemistry outside of the plant kingdom. The liver can be damaged, but the liver is also remarkably good at regenerating too. You aren't going to wear your liver out unless you seriously abuse it.

Toxins build up in body tissues, regardless of the liver. If they didn't there would be no danger to the liver from detoxification.

Point me to something that substantiates why you need a special diet to properly detox the body, and what exactly this means. Otherwise you're just talking out your ass.

Many natural health proponents believe that the body accumulates toxins which should be periodically flushed. While the body does naturally process and eliminate toxins, increased exposure to environmental toxins combined with drug use and unhealthy diets across much of the First World sometimes proves to be too much for the body to process, leading to health problems. By detoxifying the body, many people feel that they improve their health and state of mind, and are able to lead more balanced lives.

Anything from a peer-reviewed journal rather than some new age rag?

It's an unsourced, vague article by an unqualified author. Need to do better than that I'm afraid.

Breatharianism is a spiritual practice in which people claim to live only on life force, sunlight, or air. While breatharianism is...

Do you consider this to be feasible too?

I don't need to read a professional journal to know that I don't want toxins in my body. There is no health need for them so why take the risk.
