I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

Zkrib, remember that all the wood will be removed including that around the tree. Yesterday we aquired an old tire which will be cut and nails put through what little tread remains. It will then be put around the tree and set on top of the plywood and nailed to it. The cement will flow around the tire with its nails sticking out and adhere to it which is the reason for the nails. When the cement is dry the wood will be removed and the tree will have a tire bumper car around it which will allow it to grow and flex in the wind. I've been thinking that one up for more than a month now.
(I spooked because I was watching a news-magazine show last night about how the tree roots are tearing up the sidewalks of Los Angeles. Then I saw your concrete house next to a tree. Oh, teh evil!)

I've been doing some more thinkin' about this. If the tree becomes a problem in the far distant future, all you need do is chip away some of the cement and make the hole bigger.

The floor could be a problem long term, but the shade on the house more than makes up for it. Any excuse not to chop a tree!Long time member @ Apolyton

Yes! That's the plan. Good memory Zkrib.
I was just chatting with Bonifacio about running water on the roof to water the garden. Handy to have a hose...
Then Teddy Sr, another of Dolores's bros knows of a place in Cebu where stainless pipe can be found, cheap. It's taken from old ships when they are decommissioned or renovated and sold at whatever random lengths they are. Need stainless because of the salt spray. Using stainless welding rods a frame could be created with the pipe that will support opaque fiberglass panels flying (no walls) above the second story garden.
The garden and flying roof keeping the cement structure cool.
This is the form for the spiral staircase opening. The starcase will serve a second purpose, creating a stack to the very top which will carry away excess heat.
