And there are no Criterion movies on either Bluray or HD-DVD.

BTW, Netflix announced that they'll drop HD-DVD. I bet Zip will be next.

Asher - What's with this "rental" idea? Can't you just buy them?

Zip is great most of the time. But I sometimes wonder why I bother putting my movies in order.

I'm sure you can buy movies if you want to keep them, but renting generally saves a lot of money. I have some friends who have these massive DVD collections that they are so proud of..as if it makes their dick so much longer but oh no wait they never really watch the movies more than once. I mean, the movie does not change, unless we're talking about Han shooting first OMFG jack it losers. Bragging about a big DVD collection is like being sterile and having no balls but bragging about your big dick.

              You forgot the again Wiggy.

I prefer to own rather than rent so I may watch any movie I have as the mood strikes me. If that's not your thing then that's fine.

I haven't rented a movie in a very long time.

                Why would you buy?

With zip you get them sent to you, you can keep them for however long you're a member (though it uses up a slot), then return them.

For movies I like, I rip onto my computer, click a button to encode them to 700MB CD size with great quality still, return it.

                It's a LOT cheaper.

                  If it's < 10Mbit/sec, it ain't HD.

I don't care about cost. Convenience and ready selection is my concern.

Rent and clone. It's cheaper. Movies are absurdly expensive.

I've got a now-2TB PC that's a media server. I can seamlessly stream my collection to my TV through my PS3 and Xbox 360. I've got another collection of burned DVDs of movies.

This is the biggest reason to digitize your collection. Rent and rip, baby. Far more convenient and allows for much bigger collection.

That would be illegal... at least in the US. No idea about Canadian law, but that seems like it ought to be either way...

                            *sigh*

You forget who you are talking to again. The only thing I will be running through my computer is a chain saw. I own no x-box's or other high tech gizmos. My DVD player is one of my more advanced pieces of tech.

Btw, I also don't enjoy cable so I watch no "TV". My only video is DVD's and the occasional YouTube clip (hence the importance of an on hand selection of DVDs).

There are programs out there such that you insert your DVD into your computer, you hit the big, coloured button and it does everything for you.

Then if you got a streaming device (Apple TV, Xbox 360, PS3, Home Theatre PC, laptop, etc) it's as simple as it gets.

Go Movies -> List. Or if you're not totally inept, you can set genres, etc.
