I also was stunned as to how much this mother thought that being billingual wouldn't help her daughter. Does she realize how much more business she may be able to do if she can speak Spanish... in TEXAS? Or maybe the kid is being bred to be a housewife? Who knows... but even then, who's going to speak to the landscapers?
She's probably the type who thinks that Spanish shouldn't be spoken in public.

      DD,

Unless I see info to the contrary, I'm going to assume that subjects other than "Spanish class" in that school are taught in English (or at the very least taught in both languages with an effort to transition to English-only). I could be wrong, and if so I'll change my tune, but it would be a surprise.

The mother is doing her daughter no favors. The daughter just doesn't want to learn Spanish (or French, for that matter, I guarantee it).

Thank you, that was my point. Bilingual can be very beneficial to a persons career. I assume your comment means you don't consider working as a supervisor or manager at McDonalds a real career.

Or got a bad grade in it, most likely.

You know what they say about assuming things, right? Seriously though, I hope you're right but it would have made an effective antidote to the whining from the parent(s?) and probably defused the issue here as far as Sloww is concerned if that information had been included.

Agreed. I've said as much in other posts.

I think the initiative was called "English Only Initiatve" in California to make it illegal to teach in the Spanish language. The name of the initiative ought to point to the mentality of these people.

No, it’s not mentioned because it’s a given.

My God, when you think Slowwy can’t get more ignorant or institutionally racist – he comes up with this in his own backyard…

I wonder, after all, why you don´t make english the official language of the USA (AFAIK for some strange reason there is none) or, if you don´t like english, make it german instead, considering the masses of american inhabitants that have german roots

I wasn't accusing him of ducking the thread, in case that was the interpretation. I just noticed that we'd generated a couple of pages of posts since Sloww had last weighed in.

If I had textbooks on the subject I reckon I could get away sitting in a French or German chemistry lectures. At the end of the day in chemistry at least, and I suspect for other sciences, if you can think and follow the pictures on teh slides and know a bit about the background, you can figure stuff out as you go along.
