There were/are several sects of Sioux. Northern, Central and Southern. Each section having different tribes in the geographic location. Just because they were all Sioux, doesn't mean they all got along. They didn't sit around singing "Kumbaya" or anything similar.

The real question is how many casinos do they have?
It would seem that they have none.
It would be difficult to find a more desperate group of Americans than the North and South Dakota Sioux. The unemployment rate tops 80 percent and most residents live below the poverty level, with the average annual income on the reservation less than $8,000.
The casino-driven economic boom enjoyed by some tribes has bypassed the Sioux, whose remote location puts them beyond the reach of most tourist traffic. The result is a host of social ills ranging from suicide and substance abuse to crime and homelessness.

The plight of these people sounds pretty bad. My guess would be that they are doing this to try and get some new treaties that will give them some much deserved and needed aid.

I don't think its all that many people, though. And, of course, US authorities would ignore it. I mean, really, it is still US land, we just allow them to have tribal government there. They still have to abide by federal law. So, people without drivers' licenses will still go to jail and those that refuse to pay taxes will have liens on their houses, etc.
I didn't think they had to abide by federal law. I thought they were essentually their own country. Like that huge reservation in Arizona. They even use a different time zone than Arizona. As Arizona doesn't using daylight savings time, but the indian reservation does.
Well of course that's why I wondered how far they are prepared to go. If they declare independence in name only but take no meaningful steps to assert it then I agree, the gov will do nothing. If they start blocking highways into/out of "sovereign" territory, charge tolls, etc, the gov can't just ignore it.
It would be interesting if they did. Now if the time to do it. In our kindler, gentler society, would we put up with the goverment using force on poor defenseless indians? I don't think we would put up with it (I wouldn't).
We put up with it. There's a native occupation that has been going on not far from here for well over a year despite court orders to vacate. They ignore the court and the police don't dare move in and move them.

They don't have to abide by state law, but federal law probably does have to be followed.
Not necessarily. They weren't wiped out LordShiva.
He could concievably be 2nd generation and have a parent that is Cherokee. That wasn't the issue.
