You know, the Lakotas were actually from Minnesota originally, and IIRC there are still lakotas living there. A branch of the Lakotas moved to the area that became the Dakotas in the mid 18th century. I believe they were forced to do so after loosing a power struggle with other Lakota tribes. They arrived in time to take advantage of the herds of horses which had spread to the area from the Spanish territory and they aggressively carved out there own territory from the ancestral lands of other tribes.
