Etchy, you're missing it. With your knowledge of history, and hopefully history books, you would be a rich teller of fortunes in the court of some king.

A very useful rescource I did not realize I had. My map, I have a very large map of the world as well as some good and detailed, geographic maps of Florida and the carribean.

I suppose after a decade or so I would try to take some of my seminole tribesman with me and begin the long ass walk to mexico, bartering for translaters along the way. I would hope not to be killed by crazy mezoamericans along the way and head to Tenochticlan(sp) and do everything I could to prepare them for the coming of the Europeans.

I think I could convince the king of the coming diasaster with a show of science and technology. With a real organized city state, I think the natives could hold the Americas. The important thing is to be on the island of hispaniola when columbus lands and prevent them from sailing back to Europe. Mexico has the rescources to keep the white man at bay, I know enough about engineering to give them crossbows, I have BUILT an almost life size trebuchet based on trial and error with some friends for a contest, better smelting technology, better ocean going vessels. I think with a century to prepare the Mexicans could be waiting for Columbus and make sure it is a one way trip.

My computer is pluged into a battery that I could use to give computer some running time. When I arrive in 1380 I turn the computer off then find a a few indians (Chickisaws I think.) I get them to the computer and turn it on. I use paint to communicate that I am a representative of gods and that the gods will get very angry if they don't follow my commands. I then the local language as cater to all my needs. Once I learn the local language, I will translate the bible and convert them all to christians and found Christian State (lead by me) in the New World. Using my knowledge, I will teach them to make better weapons (all I really need to do is teach them to forge metals and they will have weapons better than anyone's. I'd teach them to make firearms if I knew how to make blackpowder) I would then conquer as much as Americas as possible.

I have some stuff that would be valuable if I was in europe, paintings and such. However, I'd be out in the middle of nowhere, about 5 kms from the nearest native village in the middle of winter.

Food, nothing that would be of use in those times. No water, but that wouldn't be a problem. I have a whole box of 50 steel pins that would be very valuable here. I'd have to take it along with my very strange clothes and trade to get stuff that I could use, seeing as I wouldn't have anything that I could cook back then.

A few small tools, but nothing handy. Screwdrivers but no screws to fasten things. Funny the thing that would be most valuable would be that box of pins.

oh, i get my room. and i have tons of wood though. and like a lottt of clothes. i'm in my room so i have a lot of instruments i wouldn't need to use. a few flashlights. books. tons of matches. good number of good smelling candles. tampons. razor heads. hair ties. a whole case of deer park water.
a closet full of towels, toilet paper, pictures, extra blankets, and lots of toiletries.
                  bathroom with facewash and makeup.
my older sister and her room, meaning lots of religious stuff and ugly clothes that wouldn't fit me.
my parents bathroom so a hottub with DVDs that are drying on top of it...
and the kitchen. omg i have food forever! seriously. a year minimum.
oh and the basement... pool table!
attic... extra insulation stuff up there.
i'm in the back of the house though so no cars .

oh that is VERY convenient speaking the language.

                  i'd be in the woods.

transport me there now. i'm totally set. and i need to get away anyway.

No electric, that hot tub wouldn't be so hot and the DVDs would be frizbees. No car? No matter, no gas. Toilets don't flush, and that food better be canned.

I'm actually not that bad off. I get my fiancee and probably one of my neighbors who teaches MechE and would be kinda useful. I'd have a canoe, hunting rifles and fishing equipment, tools, knives, the atlas out of my car, a decent library with both fiction and useful textbooks. I have a solar charger for my laptop battery and a bunch of reference material on CD. I'm on an island in the middle of a major river a couple miles away from a decent sized Penobscot settlement who would hopefully be willing to keep me from freezing to death over the winter. And I'd have a towel. What more could I ask for? Everything I need to spread prophecy throughout the land and prepare the local tribes for the coming of the Evil White Man.

Oh yeah, and I've got a wikipedia db dump from a project I was working on in June. Forgot about that, could be handy, though I don't know what I'd do with the 2 or 3 gigs of comic book and star trek articles. No pictures though.

I would become a curiosity in the court of the last king of the Koryo dynasty before the Joseon faction kicked them out.

I would then probably be killed in the wave of anti-Mongol, anti-Chinese, anti-foreigner purges, but if not I would probably join the 25% of the medieval Korean population that consisted of escaped slaves hiding out in the mountains.

If I was time traveled in my hometown, I would be almost certainly captured and enslaved by the S'kmana or Shuswap indian tribes, and sold downriver to the powerful Haida or Bella Coola, where I would become a high ranking slave and adviser, perhaps leading to a technological revolution amongst the Pacific Northwest tribes since, due to geology field trips and labs, I know how to locate, refine and use many different minerals (ores).

Well, I would appear to be deep in the rain forest, with a whole bunch of computers, printers, phones and a microwave (I'm at the office). Lucky me.

My immediate concern is defending myself against angry wildlife. I'm screwed if a tiger shows up. Otherwise, I've got a pair of scissors that would work pretty well as a dagger. If the 50 feet is vertical as well as horizontal, then I should have access to some serious cutlery from the cafeteria kitchen immediately above me.

                            Here's the plan:

I'm about 3 miles from the fishing village of Temasek at the mouth of what's now the Singapore River; I need to walk due south for about a mile, then follow the river (luckily, I have good walking shoes in the office). I have access to 3 backpacks. I'm going to load the backpacks with as many scissors, knives, pots, pans, and pens and pads of paper as I can. The scissors, knives, pots and pans I'll use for trading. The pens and pads of paper I'll use to introduce literacy to the natives of Temasek; with any luck, that plus some rudimentary first aid knowledge will be enough to set me up as a wise man. When the sultanate of Malacca gets established just to the north a few years from now, we'll be ready to capitalize of the trading p[ossibilities.

Well, that was an amusing thought exercise; now back to work.

I'd basically get a whole house, stuck in the middle of light scrub land.

The first thing I'd want to do is pass myself off as some kind of god, it would be easy to do this with my demeanor and stature, frankly almost impossible not to do. I'd teach the natives science and Buddhism. I would unify the tribes.

Oh, I'd also teach English as one of the languages of the monastic order I found.

About 200 years later (150 years after I've died) the white people would arrive. Hopefully the explorers would consider the land a kind of holy land, one which is blessed by God (imagine a whole land of peaceful people, and the holy men speak English). Make them believe that to rape and plunder this land would be a sacrilege to God. The natives would hopefully teach the settlers Buddhism and that the holy men speak English would help prevent trickery by the white men in negotiation for lands.

Even if it does come to war (although why, when the natives welcome all peaceful settlers?) at least in the meantime the natives wouldn't have been eating and enslaving each other.

And I'd have got to found a religion. Kickass.

I have a couple surf and boogie boards within that radius. I could set up a surf shop down by the beach!

Food would be kinda scarce. There's an avocado tree, several orange trees and a lime tree that are in the 50'. Some seeds for a garden, but not a lot. Fishing would be really important.

I'd have electricity! Plenty of equipment to set up a water wheel harnessing tides flowing into/out of a lagoon, and/or wind turbines. Use the motor out of the power tools as the generators. I'm sure I could get enough juice to have some lighting (even if it's just LEDs), maybe even cooking, heating, and desalination of water.

Some form of desalination would be important I think, though there is a "river" nearby. Not sure how dependable it is though.

Supposedly the Kumeyaay Indians were very friendly, so I think it'd work out pretty well.
