Oh, much of that sounds worthwhile, certainly. I've got doubts about the food cravings (the obesity epidemic is not symptomatic of a human flaw but a cultural one IMO), and the last I heard we weren't 100% sure what the hell the purpose of sleep is. It also sounds a lot easier and less risky to take vitamin supplements than to alter our DNA and risk unknown complications. But I'm not a biochemist or physiologist; I only knew of the back problem out of that list. So I guess I'm not qualified to judge the worthiness of all of those projects.

It's all this "let's grow gills so we can live underwater" crud I have no patience for. I.E. the original topic of this thread. We've got a splendid world here (if we can stop wrecking it), why would we want to live in outer space or on some barren rock? Colonizing other planets strikes me as a silly fantasy. My condemnation of transhumanists sort of diverted us from the original subject.

Cosmic particles can blast their way through our cromosomes and effect random mutation (evolution) so why shouldn't we do more purposeful genetic alterations?

Ok it sounds like you just think we should take a conservative approach to altering the human genome. I can appreciate that.

Whereas I would appreciate a set of gills and a swimming vacation on Titan.
