Yes. In the future, in that great techno dystopia, we need both, because it is the result of both.

I will be selected as the leader of the world, however I will decline from the honor because it is not one. To be able to say "SIT" to bunch of cattle is not great, so instead they will build me a temple where I live and they come to pray and worship all that is me.

      Yes, we need both.

Plato for perverting Philosophy away from the Socratic goal of exposing the hypocracy and self contradiction of the common mans belifs and into a method of justify and proping up thouse belifs. Plato's dualism of Forms and substance also provides a key underpinning of Christian theology and de-emphisised practical experimentation for centuries thus slowing the adoption of science untill the renisance was able to break this intelectual strangle-hold.
Companions the creator seeks, not corpses, not herds and believers. Fellow creators, the creator seeks - those who write new values on new tablets. Companions the creator seeks, and fellow harvesters; for everything about him is ripe for the harvest. - Thus spoke Zarathustra, Fredrick Nietzsche

Yeah, but at list he usd corcet spelign. Or I assume he did, as I never read the original ancient Greek. Also, given that Socrates never wrote anything down and most of what we know of him comes via Plato, how can you say for certain what he did to the man's ideas?

Also, it may surprise you to learn that this is the twenty-first century, not the eighteenth, and the so-called enlightenment has been over for quite a while now. Exactly how long is not really settled. Anyway, get with the times. If you're going to be an atheist, fine, but get your head out of your arse.

                  I also dislike Ayn Rand...

And Plato only underpinned some Christian thought. There are Christian groups (and have been) that were more like aristotle than plato.

With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

No, really, I dislike the ones who are interested in hearing themselves speak. I like those who are determined to find out truths and don't get bogged down in trivial detail and relativism. I don't know them by name, but I know them when I see them.

It was an ex concessis argument aimed at what Dr Strangelove said. The good doctor is a churchgoer, IIRC. I myself am an atheist, BTW. Like Schopenhauer said, religion is, in a way, philosophy for the people. So if philosophy is irrelevant, then religion is also irrelevant.

Philosophy is aimed at the natural world (+ some), religion is not aimed at the natural world. Science only deals with the natural world.

Was in response to Impaler, who posted a normal 'thoughtless atheist' post (not to say that all atheists are thoguhtless, but it does seem the most vocal are of that variety).
