  • More non-gay gays: This time in the church

Not gay, just pretending, priest says

VATICAN CITY (AP) – A Vatican official suspended after being caught on hidden camera making advances to a young man said in an interview published today that he is not gay and was only pretending to be gay as part of his work.

In an interview with La Repubblica newspaper, Monsignor Tommaso Stenico said he frequented online gay chat rooms and met with gay men as part of his work as a psychoanalyst. He said that he pretended to be gay in order to gather information about "those who damage the image of the Church with homosexual activity.''

Vatican teaching holds that homosexual activity is a sin.

"It's all false; it was a trap. I was a victim of my own attempts to contribute to cleaning up the Church with my psychoanalyst work," La Repubblica quoted Stenico as saying.

Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said Saturday that the monsignor had been suspended pending a Vatican investigation. Stenico is a top official in the Vatican's Congregation of the Clergy.

The Vatican acted after Vatican officials recognized Stenico's office in the background of a television program on gay priests that was broadcast on Oct. 1 on La7, a private Italian TV network. Stenico was secretly filmed making advances to a young man and asserting that gay sex was not sinful.

In the Repubblica interview, Stenico said he had met with the young man and pretended to talk about homosexuality "to better understand this mysterious and faraway world which, by the fault of a few people – among them some priests – is doing so much harm to the Church.''

He said he had never been gay and was heterosexual, but remained faithful to his vow of celibacy.

Italy's Sky TG24 said Stenico had written a letter to his superiors with a similar defense.

Calls to Stenico's home and Vatican office went unanswered Sunday.
"The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."
Ben Kenobi: "That means I'm doing something right. "

Well, the church (at least the US church) is full of gays, especially in the priesthood. Have to say that this guy's story sound like a load of BS, of course.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I thought this was going to be about the ones that barged into the service of one in San Francisco to disrupt the service.

If by "service" you mean "mass," that's so... 1990s.

I'm just surprised that such antiquated tactics would make the news.

Yeah, O'Reilly had a fit about that, I thought he was going to blow a fuse. But I dont think they barged in, they wore costumes and went in under false pretenses to mock something about the Church.

So lets have a reality check

The Catholic Church says homosexuals are an abomination to God, blah blah blah. The Church does more than its share to create an environment of hatred and persecution for homosexuals while harboring pedophiles. Now, the teen years and puberty can be tough enough on kids without a bunch of "prophets" telling them "God Hates Fags" even if "we love the sinner". And I wont even get into the Church's long history of killing all sorts of "sinners".

But you and Bill O'Reilly are "whining" because two homosexuals mocked the Church? The Church deserves to be mocked, if Catholics (or any other "people of God") want to run around telling people they're going to hell or whatever, they should be mocked... Its "akin" to Jews mocking neo-Nazis.

O'Reilly insisting this was a BIG story and accusing "the mainstream media" of a conspiracy to keep it quiet was

That's why Fox News isn't worth watching. They'll take a small event like 2 men walking into a church protesting and try to twist it into some sort of national persecution of Christians perpetrated by "the left".

                        It's all just garbage.
