If you have to pause to beat the AI, then you're playing the game on something easier than the easiest setting. That's fine, however you enjoy playing the game I won't argue with, but what I am saying is that if you are going to have a pause feature AND allow the ability to manage your units and buildings, then its a little hard to call the game an RTS, it would be more of an P/RTS.
I don't see why rts games disable the ability to manage units/buildings/anything when in pause mode. Some people like it, some don't... it's not like it makes any difference for those who don't like it, it's not like they're forced to use it, so why not include it?

I think it is fine, just as long as its not default and is switchable in Multiplayer.
How can it be default? It's up to the user to press the pause button if they want to pause... if they don't want to pause the game, all they have to do is not to press the pause button... simple as that
Old games can be fun. I kept playing CTP2 through most of Civ3's life and it came out before Civ3. The AI sucked but we always played MP so that wasn't a problem and we all already knew about the infinite builds bug & how to identify when someone uses it so that bug wasn't a problem anyway. It was by far the best Civ style MP game out there until Civ4 MP was released.
Does anyone here have a login at battle.net? If so, could you perhaps please post my question in the StarCraft general forum in a new thread and/or the Official "Ask your SCII questions" Thread? Ask whether there is a pause mode under which you can give orders, and mention the reasoning that it would please the casual single-player gamer who doesn't like clickfesting (=> more sales ), while it wouldn't hurt the "hardcore" player, because they simply don't need to use pause, and that it could be disabled in multiplayer.
Though of course knowing the reputation of the Blizzard forum, it would probably result in people calling names like "You n00b!" etc. (which would of course be true, but if I like playing RTS on easier-than-easy, then that's my choice right - I don't feel like training to do as many "mouse actions per minutes" as possible)

Silly design choice IMO.
Btw, did Age of Mythology and the third Age of Empires game have pause mode with orders? (The only RTS I've ever played are WarCraft, StarCraft, AoE I & II)
