When I was living at home, I never had any problem I think. But there have been a couple times where I did have problems when living on my own... just recently as an example. What I was missing just recently was B-12, which I would have gotten if I had used soymilk/etc (over the summer I had very little soy).
BTW, you don't use soy, so you use rice milk? Or do you just ignore cold cereals (only place I use it, really). You didn't like dairy before, so maybe you weren't ever use to eating cold cereal. (I don't like milk, but like cold cereal)
I personally don't try to copy an omni-diet or whatever... (I have never eaten meat) even though I do eat soymeat. It is mostly that I like soy, and am looking for easy to eat/convenient sources of protein. I eat Tofu also, but if you want variety there it takes time to prepare, so I eat the processed soymeats occasionally.
I personally think that like with many things, soy is fine in moderation.

Trans fat. Stay away from this. Unfortunately restaurants and fast food restaurants don't say if they use these. I know KFC recently said they are going away from trans fat. This was a big issue for me on my trip. It's hard to know what to eat. I generally don't worry about it in these situations.
but I can never give up pizza. Even though pizza is a product of the devil. Nothing should taste so good.

Unfortunately, some don't eat enough good for you stuff, eat too much processed stuff, eat too much cheese, and/or don't exercise enough. But even then, average life expectancy is longer (over 4 years in California for example).

Um, this wasn't about porridge... yeah, milk. My Mum has drunk Soy milk for years, but I think it tastes like dirt, or dirt disguised by sweetening.
I like the flavor of ricemilk, especially ricemilk fortified with chickpeas (I'd say it has a sweet earthiness and mild nuttiness). I'm planning to switch to DIY nut milk though, since the carton milk is imported from USA/Canada and the DIY nut milk would be better, cheaper, healthier and more environmentally friendly.
Also rice milk is mostly carbs, while nut milk would be mostly fats - I think milk should be fatty.

What is true is that Americans tend to eat a lot more soy than the Japanese, and often in different forms - ie not fermented. There's not any precedent that the levels of soy consumption in USA are "safe". It's touted as a miracle food and thrown into everything to make it cheaper and/or to allow it to be labeled as health food.
Personally I think that the level of processing done to non-fermented soy required to make it "safe" means it can't be health food. It may or may not be better than that which it tends to replace in a typical diet, but I think there are better alternatives still.
