    Stopped smoking, gained 7.5 kg

Got a company car, gained another 5.

In the mean time I started biking to my work and I lost again 6. Still overweight though.

Even thinking of food makes me gain weight.

I was led to believe that Diabetes Type 1 is not 'got' per se, but more is a genetic condition... not necessarily obvious at first, but not really avoidable either (without an Atkins like diet from a very young age). Type 2 or "Adult Onset" is the kind where you have sensitized your cells to insulin due to overeating carbs.

What do you propose as a suitable alternative then?

Yeah, I have tried to cut back on my food somewhat lately but I have been doing one hell of a lot of exercise and I have lost a considerable amount of weight. Still got a good way to go yet but I am starting to see the results of my efforts.

exercise is the best medicine. I need to get back to the gym. haven't been since april. .

Overall it does curb my appetite- even if a strong workout makes me starved for energy (I eat a power bar afterwords).

I was planning on going to the gym today, it just hasn't happened yet . I think it will be easier when I'm working, as I stop off after work. So it doesn't feel out of the way. But when I'm comfortable at home, it's hard to change that state.

Watch it or I'll row you to death - actually on second thoughts, that sounds really dodgy

Well try and get back into it Dis, sort yourself out. Although I agree, I don't eat as much when I go to the gym. But I have managed to get myself into a routine. Although I never went this evening although I was at work for 11 hours

Just those of us in the civilised world........

I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.

it has a genetic component, but in the end it is only "odds" like if noone has it in your family it is about 500/1 if one of your parents has it nthan it is 150/1 chance... etc... that is for the US... in my family noone had it before.

different countries have different ratios as well. It is now appeared in every country in the world, but it is still heavily linked to the nutrition/lifestyle...

In Kenya for example there is 12x higher incidence of diabetes in towns than in the countryside (both types), as the lifestyle difference is great for example. This type of differentiation in the west does not exist as we all enjoy similar lifestyle and foods.

In any case there is a good chance that if we had a different lifestyle even diabetes type 1 would have been much less spread as well.

For type 2 that is obvious - this is a lifestyle disease, plain and simple.

this summer my daughter got Diabetes type 1... she is 7 years old, and well I had a nice "food" study since than.

Sorry to hear that. A good buddy of mine was also diagnosed with some light form of diabetes recently. He has a lot of trouble with physical effort now. It sucks.

                          Thanks VetLegion,

but about your friend - why would he have trouble with physical effort because of diabetes

in principle with diabetes your insuling production (type 1) or absorbtion (type 2) is screwed up, and as long as you make it up artificially (in type 1 that means insulin injections daily) you have no problems.

Ok having the balance as right as the organ is not totally easy, but it is doable, as for physical effort - more you exercise better it is for you, especially if you are diabetic.

As diabetics usually die about 15 years earlier than the non-diabetics because of cardiovascular/nervous system problems induced by lifelong irregular blood sugar levels... but if you take care of yourself (a bit harder than for us non-diabetics, still even for us it's not easy either to live "right" ) than you can live past 90 as well.

                            Here's some random stuff...

New Zealand has one of the highest rates of obesity in the world, like right after you-know-who. NZ is famous for, amongst other things, a meat and diary culture. I'm not sure if anyone beats NZ in terms of meat and diary consumption...

For something interesting about "healthy oils", google this:
                            coconut oil pigs

The short of it, is that pigs fed coconut oil remain lean, while pigs fed polyunsaturated oils (like canola oil) get fat.

Coconut oil is extremely rich in saturated fat.

It's probably not that "conventional wisdom" is backwards, it's probably more like "conventional wisdom" is wrong or badly incomplete. Definitely some oils, like Olive Oil, are healthy and are proven to be healthy because they've been used for eons. But the oils invented in the last few decades should be considered extremely unproven, especially processed oils.

Soy is evil. Google soy. The controversy is clear, and disturbingly there are no high-ranked sites debunking the "conspiracy" (contrast by googling "canola oil")
In short (the theory goes): Unfermented soy is not health food, or even healthy. It's harmful.

Soy is marketed as a miracle food and is cheaply and easily grown, this should raise suspicions almost automatically.
Canola oil may also be evil, for much the same reasons (marketed as a miracle foodstuff, rapeseed is cheaply and easily grown).
I'm quite convinced that soy is evil, I'm undecided on Canola oil, but my gut (quite literally) says it's at very least up to no good.

These two products are consumed extensively, especially in USA, the USA consumes a lot more soy per capita than any other country. It makes food cheaper to produce.

                            Finally:
                            Diet vs Obesity.
I managed to find some statistics, don't know how good the statistics are.

Vegetarians have 1/3rd the obesity rate of normal.
Vegans have 1/9th the obesity rate of normal.

This presumably includes the idiots vegetarians who eat way too much cheese/eggs, and idiot vegans who eat way too much processed food (yes: To me, anyone who eats a significant amount of processed food is being idiotic. Deal.)
While Vegans are typically more interested in nutrition, this seems to usually be focused on nutrients moreso than calorie counting - in other words, taking care to eat enough, rather than taking care not to eat too much... I might also daresay that most Vegans are Vegan out of fantacism or something similar, and willpower is not a factor (eating meat is simply unthinkable not something to resist doing...) - I mean it's not like Vegans are going to have naturally extremely high willpower.

Also, obese vegans don't seem to suffer the health problems generally associated with obesity.

Anyway, regardless, I do think that humanity is messing with things they don't understand when making processed foods and eating meat which doesn't need to be run down and killed with a pointy stick. Modern meat consumption is unnatural because it's high in fat and little energy is expended getting it to eat - in the natural environment these things would be somewhat balanced. In a century we'll look back on this time on history (from 1970-2010) and it'll be the "big WTF moment" of nutrition.

Out of mostly pure laziness, I eat chicken tenders and pizza almost every day for lunch. We'll see who dies first.

I know people who have quite a few extra pounds despite eating very healthy very religiously.

It probably works for some, not for all. The human body is complex, there's not one cause for weight gain. Thinking there is is naive.
