I wish Bush could speak like that.
    That's hardly high praise.

Most of the English speaking world would settle for Bonzo Bush being able to speak comprehensible English, and leave eloquence and rhetorical flourishes for those capable of joined up English and joined up thinking.

true. I still think it was eloquent, even by more demanding standards. YMMV

I'm sorry, but this is obviously a day for your being incredibly obtuse.

I'm well aware it wasn't a dinner party which the Iranian leader was speaking at.

It's an analogy for how a host is meant to behave towards an invited person.

You don't invite people to speak at a debate and then preface your introduction of them with insults.

Of course, I may be underestimating the influence shock-jocks and the likes of Ann Coulter and Fox News have on American academe and manners...

Cultural superiority I don't care about. Moral superiority, not a problem with this guy. I could spit in his face, and easily feel superior.

I listened to him, and heard things that seemed to me reasonable and necessary to ask.

I find it highly amusing that so many folks here, virtually all of whom (except for Weezil) specialize in insults, rhetorical questions, heavy sarcasm, and various other forms of rudeness, are suddenly so in arms for etiquette.

Thats it, this isnt that important, and there is no more light to be shed in this thread. Carry on without me.

Exactly. I mean it wasn't like the audience was going to let Ahmedinejad off the hook or anything!

I can't recall the moderation (or otherwise) of their views being the point. Don't let's get lost in muddy waters, eh ?

BTW, Im sure youd be delighted at Neturei Kartas views on sexual orientation.
As with so many other sects in the Judaeo-Christian tradition and like many Muslim fundamentalists, the shortcomings of their views on human nature and ignorance of science come as no surprise to me.

Still, they'd get on with Massad and Ahmedinejad wouldn't they ?

Why not? That seems to be exactly what they did after all.

You think this guy is on the same level as Ahmedinejad? What exactly is so bad about comparing a person like this to a dictator?

I'm not saying it was the hospitable thing to do, even in the US. We just don't hold hospitality in as high regard here.

I think here in the US most people are going to respect Bollinger more for what he said, than condemn him for bad manners.

Of course the mans speech was 'as expected'. A whole lot of BS and of course he didnt have the ''intellectual courage'' to answer the introducer's questions. His speech was a lot of propaganda.

It appears that most of his ridiculous statements came from answers to audience questions.

And he also drew signifigant applause from said audience. And if we're judging this based on the reaction less contraversial speakers got at Columbia, they allowed him to speak at all.

                            • I may be inclined to argue that some of his responses may have deserved applause (and I didn't hear much at all when he mentioned homosexuals don't exist in Iran... which was the most damaging to his reputation).

                              • Which ones? The Holocaust denial? The evading questions about Iran's support for terrorism? Or would it be the anti-Bush rhetoric he pepered the speech with that would make all that acceptable to you?
