Wearing a black mask don't mean you intend to use violence or anything like that. Anarcists wear black masks. Are you saying that it's ok to infiltrate anarcist groups and not other groups, even if the anarcists have done anything wrong?

Cole meanwhile is pointing away from the riot police and telling the masked cops repeatedly to leave, and to put down the rock.

When the masked cops approach the riot police, the union guys see them as protesters trying to start a fight. The union guys try to create a barrier between the riot police and the angry "protesters."

At around 1:40 on the video, you can see the riot cops pushing the masked cops away, because the riot police probably think these guys are protesters.

As this is all going on, the masked cops are hitting the union guys with repeated shoves. The masked cops do nothing to defuse the situation.

At 2:20 in the video, Cole says "these three guys are cops." After that, the union guys make no effort to block the masked cops.

Interestingly, once their cover is blown by Cole, the masked cops are allowed into the riot police line.

They are leaving. That is the whole video.

They are going to the police line, away from the BB, when they are confronted by Cole.

I am not seeing what you are seeing, included a one-sided account of assault.

The police in Canada routinely keep an eye on many groups that can reasonably be expected to cause a disturbance to the peace.

Anti-globalist nutbars who wear masks and fancy violence as political expression qualify.

Yes, there is risk of the cops being attacked, but the same thing happens when the cops gear up and form a riot line. They create an us-them situation. The cop line becomes a target for people's frustration.

I've been in protests where cops are walking in the crowd. They take a non-aggressive stanch. They talk with people and the message they send is "we're not your enemy, we're here to protect you too,"

At Queens Park, the cops used to set up a waist-high movable fence and there would be a line of ordinary uniform cops behind it. I never saw anyone trying to break through because there was no point. The legislature doors would be locked.

Put a riot police line in front of the building, and then you have something to attack.

They don't make any effort to leave.

They could have left at any time by walking away from the riot police line, but they don't

Meanwhile, throughout the video, Cole is trying to defuse the situation by keeping the "protesters" away from the riot cops, telling them to leave and telling one guy to put down the rock.

Look at 2:20. Until that point, everyone thinks they're protesters trying to attack the riot police line. After that, Cole and the union guys stop standing between the cops and the masked cops.

I'm sure there are situations where what you describe is appropriate.

I think there are also other situations that call for riot gear to be obvious, where uniformed cops would be a target and attacks on them would touch off the baton charge.
