It counts as Siberia, which belongs to you know whom.

Um, it's a Norwegian map, you know how it is. It was the best I could do on such short notice.

Except the weird placement of the name of Siberia, it seems to be a valid map.

Remember: The North Pole is frozen ocean.
Except for a few miles along a nation's coastline, you can claim ocean as your territory.

In Soviet Russia, North Pole claims you!

This is not exactly correct. If a country can show a geological feature is an extension of their continental shelf then it is possible to get recognition further out to sea. Russia has already once made an attempt to have this area recognized as Russian territory, but was told that they had insufficient evidence. The main purpose of this mission was not to plant the flag, but to gather the geological evidence they will need to support their claim. The flag planting was merely to reinforce the hoped for scientific evidence to bolster their claim when they re-present it.

They should plant a city nearby with a library and other culture producing buildings and wait till their cultural borders grow into the (obviously not) eternal ice.
Of course the danes can do the same and miht get the upper hand

It is speculated that there are vast oil and gas reserves there. Hence the Russian interest.

                            Could be.

This is as I understand the issue as well. Russia has until this year to present the evidence in support of their claim. Canada has until 2013 (we ratified the international treaty late).

                                Go drill Siberia some more.
