        Haha...It just might.

        However, I think this is all about them trying to get the geology to change the geography by taking advantage of a poorly thought out clause in an international treaty.

                  The Lomonosov Ridge is not technically part of any continent's continental shelf. It looks like a sliver of continental crust that was spit off of Eurasia when the extension of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge near it formed

                    This is not exactly correct. If a country can show a geological feature is an extension of their continental shelf then it is possible to get recognition further out to sea. Russia has already once made an attempt to have this area recognized as Russian territory, but was told that they had insufficient evidence. The main purpose of this mission was not to plant the flag, but to gather the geological evidence they will need to support their claim. The flag planting was merely to reinforce the hoped for scientific evidence to bolster their claim when they re-present it.
                    The ridge connects North America and Eurasia, so to claim it as solely Russian is truly demented.
