This is not exactly correct. If a country can show a geological feature is an extension of their continental shelf then it is possible to get recognition further out to sea. Russia has already once made an attempt to have this area recognized as Russian territory, but was told that they had insufficient evidence. The main purpose of this mission was not to plant the flag, but to gather the geological evidence they will need to support their claim. The flag planting was merely to reinforce the hoped for scientific evidence to bolster their claim when they re-present it.Comment
