  • Do you know what a peck is?

I've been trying to figure out what a peck is. I have a receipe for some awesome Jalapeno Pear relish and it calls for a Peck of pears. Yes I know it's a measurement the equal of 8 quarts but how do you measure 8 quarts of pears?

I just want to know how many flippin' pears are in a peck.

Here you go. What kind of recipe is that, BTW?

There are about 5.25 pears in a quart, times 8 quarts in a peck means that the answer you're looking for is 42.

Depends on the pear, doesn't it. Get a two gallon container and put pears in it 'till it's full.

According to this link, a peck of pears is around 12-14 pounds of pears. If they're using such an inaccurate measurement, the recipe has enough give that anywhere in that range is probably acceptable.

You should measure before peeling, by the way, even if they say "peeled" as the recipe you're probably going off of does. You buy a peck unpeeled and then peel it.

            The answer is ALWAYS 42.

                        "A pint's a pound, the world around."

Okay, that's really only true of water, but it'd be close for pears -- so a peck = 8 quarts = 16 pints = 16 pounds of pears.

I prefer to believe the scientists who disagree

It's actually not so far from your estimate, but that's largely arrived by two noncorrelated facts. Pears are not liquid or formless solids, and thus in a pint of pears there is a lot of air. Also, pears are not the same density as water by any means, even though they are largely water. Perhaps if you took mushed up pears it would be close.

                          Anyhow use 12-14 pounds

A very rough approximation. Water = 8.34 lb/gal, or 1.04 lb/pint. And then dry measures are different from wet measures.

                              Anyway, 8 quarts = 1 peck = ¼ bushel.
