Federal officials said they are examining comments made in online postings of interviews with Sue Niederer, who was arrested last week during a Republican campaign rally in Mercer County when she interrupted a speech by first lady Laura Bush.

The comments caught the attention of a Secret Service analyst and are under review, Special Agent Tony Colgary told The Times of Trenton for Wednesday's editions.

Hmmmm... and exactly when did Oerdin interupt a speach of the VP, or confront him in person?

Again... please post the law that Oerdin has broken.

If online posting's aren't a big deal as you claim Ming, why are they looking at them?

To harrass the harrasser... who knows... maybe they are looking for a pattern, or something that will support their lame charges... if something comes from it, be sure to let us know

again, the charges in both examples have come from the personal part of the supposed "attack"... I don't think I've ever seen a case where somebody has been arrested for simply wishing somebody was dead... or thinking they should be killed.
I've heard many such things against politicians in the past, and yet have never heard of somebody being arrested for it.

So again... post the law that you think he broke.

Because this administration is heavy-handed, power-crazed, intolerant of all criticism, paranoid, and just plain bat**** crazy? Because the White House thinks it can do whatever it wants, whenever it wants? Because Caligula had more respect for the Rule of Law than the Bushies?

Nah, must be because wishing the Veep ill in a gaming forum is a federal offense.

Speaking of posting laws. Any chance we can see the ones associated with what is and is not acceptable Poly behavior?

Actually... I'm working on a badly needed upgrade to the current FAQ. While one might think that the general "use common sense" rule would surfice for many of the unpredictable new violations...

                          They're quite simple, really.

Crazy posts about dragging the Vice President out into the street and executing him are ok.

Calling another poster's mom fat is not. Neither is being Asher.

                              As for the relevant laws...

The President and Vice President of the United States have email addresses
(president@whitehouse.gov, vice_president@whitehouse.gov) so that concerned citizens can communicate their legitimate opinions on various topics. Do not, under any circumstances, send threatening email to these addresses, even as a joke. Threatening the President is a federal crime with a severe sentence:

US Code Title 18 - Crimes and Criminal Procedure - Part I - Crimes - Chapter 41 - Extortion and Threats - Section 871 - Threats against President and successors to the Presidency

Whoever knowingly and willfully deposits for conveyance in the mail or for a delivery from any post office or by any letter carrier any letter, paper, writing, print, missive, or document containing any threat to take the life of, to kidnap, or to inflict bodily harm upon the President of the United States, the President-elect, the Vice President or other officer next in the order of succession to the office of President of the United States, or the Vice President-elect, or knowingly and willfully otherwise makes any such threat against the President, President-elect, Vice President or other officer next in the order of succession to the office of President, or Vice President-elect, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both.

                              (Source: http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-...Cite:+18USC871)

The Secret Service has traditionally interpreted this statute to also cover any online source, whether email, web pages, blogs, etc., and have investigated cases accordingly. While actual prosecutions are rare (most "threats" are judged to be either misunderstandings, jokes, hyperbole, or other sorts of non-threatening compositions) investigations are common; stories can be easily found online through simple searches. Even if you are ultimately exonerated, the problems associated with a law enforcement entity's investigation are numerous and best avoided. Do not send threatening letters to the U.S. President, Vice President, or any governmental official.

It's really smart of you to look the other way on this, Ming...
