The "dark ages" ended when the last of the raiding vikings were converted to Christianity, which was the end of the tenth century. 1066 was one Christian country conquering another, and not all that notable if you didn't happen to be either Anglo-Saxon or Norman.

What's mostly messed up about that post is that it clearly emphasizes "Christian Dark Ages".

As noted above, it was largely christianity that brought civilization OUT of the dark ages. The dark ages were largely caused by the fall of the Roman empire and the lapse of "civilization" due to increased barbarian/criminal activity, lack of trade as a result, and the failure of Rome to provide the services and such that the people of Rome were used to.

The fact that people were forced to spend more time surviving than studying and working on scientific advancement was not the fault of christianity in any meaningful way; and the preservation of the knowledge of the Roman empire, to the extent that it was preserved, was as a result of the Catholic church maintaining it.

The Church may have been periodically against certain scientific advancements; but overall it was not nearly as anti-technology as some religions [including modern day christianity].

Anyways, the dark ages was a phenomena confined to Europe. As Molly Bloom pointed out, the Islamic societies of the second third of the first millenium were as much a heir of greco-roman knowledge and practice as were the Rennaisance societies. That graph is history at its most stupid. Well, near its most stupid.

Even ignoring the rest of the world I disagree with the notion that no development occured in European dark age societies.

Yeah, and esp. if the graph has the dark ages from (before) 1000-1400 AD

Also, what do we make of those guys in the Byzantine Empire which can count as European (at least in part) and even Christian (just not catholic)? They didn't have a comparable dark age....well until 1204 maybe.

The single greatest mathematical advance was developed by "dark age arabs": the decimal numbering system.

                During the dark ages:

There were cathedrals being build of more than 100 meters high consisting mostly of glass windows...

Tons of literature and paintings were made...

These so-called dark ages weren't so dark as they seem.

dannubis, do you know what period the term 'dark ages' usually refers to?

Between 7pm and 7am usually. Season varying of course.

Is that when cathedrals are built in Kent? I understand immigrant workers work cheap at night.

That is a really good point...I suppose any such graphical representation is going to end up being extraordinarily simplistic.

The discussion page (not the article itself) on wiki about "Dark Ages" is quite interesting.

I think the graph is wrong because I don't see a break in the progression. I think the dark ages were a needed part of the progression. I don't think there would be an acceleration in progression without the dark ages along with other things.

I'm also saying that eastern civs would not have had an accelerated progression like western civ because of their different history.

Progression is a very western thing.
