The study of law is new and unfamiliar to most of you. You come in here with a brain full of mush and, if you survive, you go out thinking like a lawyer!

Respect is separate from practical usefulness to human society. In a contemporary sense, I respect math and physics a lot more than biology; but biologists are defintely helping out humanity more than mathematicians or physiicists (referring to the fields in a contemporary sense).

I also have my respect for the actually challenging disciplines. Not that there would be some that aren't, but on the basis of what KH just said, I also agree.

Given that both you and Ned are lawyers, I stand by my statement.

Oh ye gods. Now they're bigging up economics.

Here's the final word on Law. Anyone claiming this is, or should be, the most respected discipline is not safe to be allowed possession of their own opinions.

Actually, I would be embarrassed to say to anyone that I had a (albeit second) degree in accountancy.

When I hear of someone studying medicine, I assume them to be bright and hard-working people unafraid of dealing with life-or-death responsibility.

When I hear of someone studying mathematics, I assume them to smell of damp biscuits.

Is that a marker of respect in certain cultures?

It's more interesting to ask which of these fields is most evil.

Physics - gave us teh nukes
Math - calculations to launch nukes
CompSci - software for calculations to launch nukes
Engineering - bombers and rockets carrying nukes
Philosophy - asks what nukes are and why to launch nukes
History - explains later why it had been cool to launch nukes
Theology - helps unterstanding why God didn't stop nukes after launch

                          etc, etc
                          Blah

Bright and hardworking for sure, but talking to my schoolfriends who went into the profession... they are now so jaded that the last comment takes on a different meaning - they are unafraid because they don't care anymore.

Nah, military stuff tends to have civilian applications. Especially all the robotics research the military is doing.
