Without mathematics we wouldn't be able to run the complex simulations that are helping us identify new drugs that could cure diseases like HIV.
There's already a cure for HIV and it doesn't require complex simulations...it's called quarantine.

That would be amusing if it actually made sense.

Modern mathematical logic is being taught in philosophy departments and there are lots of philosophers who specialize and write papers on that topic. We're not stuck with the traditional logic of Aristotle and his ilk. Not sure exactly how it differs from what the mathematicians are doing. They are probably interested in somewhat different issues. One of the things that sets the philosophers apart is that they try to use logical systems to shed new light on philosophical issues.

The only difference I've seen is it takes Philosophy students an entire course to explain fundamental Boolean logic and De Morgan's Law...rather than something that is mentioned in passing.

I voted Banana. There's some I respect less, but none I respect most.

I find it laughable that history has as many votes as it does though. I'm a history major. I know that history is mostly a bull**** degree.

I voted biology, BTW. They don't get enough kudos. They made huge progress. Despite that, all we talk about is physics, physics, physics. Don't get me wrong, I love physics, but physicists seem to be stuck in the mud right now. At least, its the impression I have. Biology is where the action is

Because we all know that, without lawyers, there would be no crime, no disputes over contractual rights or estates, etc. A lawyer free society would be perfect and without discord.

You can hate lawyers all you want, but it's asinine to believe that the legal profession is unnecessary.

That's what you get when you take 'Logic for idiots 101' You should know better than that.

Physics is meh. None of the really hyped work has visible applications. Not so in CS.

A lawyer free society would be a society just as ****ed up, but without the unnecessary expenses of ambulance-chasing lawyers who sue everyone when their coffee is hot and when their coffee is cold.
