Meh. It's just old rhetorics. So they target their missiles against Euro targets. It's just saying that we might do this gesture that has no real meaning.

What people have to understand is the old rhetorics. This is really not a big deal IMO. We get always messages that if you join NATO, we will be forced to defend ourselves, and we choose the way we defend ourselves. I mean, it's news as much as who won the Idols. This is how Putin talks. This isn't "we're gonna attack you". It's "if you do this, we want something in return".

Surely there's paranoia and the old "NO! We are the real victims here!", but that said, they don't want a war with NATO, US, EU or all combined. And neither does the West want war with Russia. It's not about who can win, it's about what's the point? There's no real reasons, actually ANY reasons where it would make sense. I'm sure our Eurasian strategists will claim that the West wants to take over the east with military power and slaughter everyone but that's not what we want. We want to put McDonalds and Coca Cola on every corner and just get the money, and that's what happens without war anyway.

So no, this isn't a threat. You have to get the Putin translation book out and see what it means. They just want to get into the game, where someone asks what they think about such moves and back into the geopolitical map. That is, they want to come in for the loot as well and become a hub for the east that should be consulted as well.

I ask again, so what if they target missiles? It's nothing but a gesture. They can't launch a single missile and neither will the west. Keep on building and let the others bark.

Still it is less comfortable to live knowing that the missiles are already directed at you. Besides, withdrawal from the conventional arms treaty will introduce an additional tension (even if everyone knows that the war is highly unlikely).

But what makes is the missile defense for any communism symphatizer who tries to re-live the past.

THe REAL worry is that Putin calculates NATO is taking over the world, and THIS time no one send him a memo. Like Molotov-Ribbentrop, at least Hitler had the courtesy to send a plan asking if Stalin wants to share. Then, Hitler stabbed him in the back and was counting 2 when Stalin was still on 5.

I think this is what worries the comrades. That they're not getting into the free for all loot, left out once again. But the mistake here is, that there's no free for all looting going to happen. There's no military invasion we're going to see. It's all business. So, he wonders why no memo. Nothing. Not even an e-mail. Surely NATO is stabbing him in the back now. Surely they are about to roll into Moscow to steal all the cabbage and scrap metal and lure ordinary people into sugar drinks and singing that is actually talking, this thing called... rap. No way are we going to let brown face take over Moscow! Noooooo, quickly, line up the police so they can give tickets for brown face! We use military on gay people, that's the division, yes, cops for brown face, military for the gays. What about gays that are brown face? USE MPs!!! Psychologically (on a subconscious level at least, whatever reasonable arguments you may come up with), it's a big difference. Besides, the likelihood of a malfunction increases, the recognition of which also contributes to the tension.

Which makes it kind of stupid. If a nuke is launched as a malfunction toward Europe, Russia will be a wasteland before anyone knows what happened. Best to point them at some benign target like Canada than to risk a nuclear war over an accident.
