How many Indians are there in total? How many (as a percentage) are likely to be ignorant? How large will this body be (in absolute numbers)?

Then again, I don't think that's what aneeshm meant. More like, the society and its standards does not necessarily translate into what a person is supposed to believe or follow. That is, if I don't like to follow the standards a.. generic society in India might have, it doesn't mean I have to hold back when I'm in another setting, outside that society, and even if I was from that society originally, it does not make one a hypocrite by default.

Given the context, with the people involved, you'd have to be purposely ignorant to still think this warrants ourtage.

"Fuss" is really all this is, even though there's a silly law involved. Gere isn't going to be extradicted to India.

If it's laws that you want to focus on rather than "sensibilities" (which I explicitly stated my statements were dealing with), the US has it's own stupid ones. Not just the "out of date" stuff like how many times you can beat your wife with a switch either. The whole Gay Marriage issue is a very rather good analogy to the prudishness of the law (and many citizens) here as well. It's not like that issue gets any coverage....

For a "Christian" nation, we sure forget a lot of parables. "Mote and Beam" in the case of us denigrating Indian society for silly prudishness.

Furthermore the flag burning fuss likely wouldn't amount to much. People burn flags from time to time but it never gets on the news unless it's part of a larger news item.
This is true in recent years, that type of story has sorta played itself out. There was a time when anyone, anywhere, who burned a flag seemed to get on the news. Now there'd need to be a missing white female plot intertwined with it... Though in recent years flag related stupidity like the Pledge of Allegiance has gotten a lot of play. In any case, bringing up what is considered "newsworthy" is hardly a positive light to shine on our society. Tabloid stuff makes it into mainstream news all the time.

If Aneeshm came here and burned a flag I doubt anybody who wasn't an eyewitness would hear anything about it.
Depends on if he immigrated illegally or not.

That's 'cos the Indish kicked the Muslims out before the later had time to fully civilize them.

I would rather prefer it, though, if people from outside were a bit more sensitive to cultural sensibilities. Many Indians adopt to some Western mores we consider weird or ridiculous stupid or plain barbaric when we visit your countries. Why is it not possible to keep a leash on yourself when you're in India?
Which of our mores do you consider weird, riddiculous stupid, or plain barbaric that Indians need to comform to?

Last week, crowds in several Indian cities burned effigies of the 57-year-old star of "An Officer and a Gentleman,'' "American Gigolo" and "Pretty Woman" after he embraced Shetty and kissed her several times on her cheeks during an HIV/AIDS awareness event in the Indian capital.
