About 244 people can afford them. Until they can, it's a small, insignificant market.

There are variants of Linux that will run on these machines, and keep them usable. How does Microsoft plan to retain this market?
Why would Microsoft want it? It's not like Indians pay for software anyway

Actually, the government and large institutions are the only ones that do pay - so losing them means losing a large part of the legal install base.
If they can pay for Windows they can spend $10 on 256MB more of RAM...

I am so satisfied with XP I cannot see myself ever switching to Vista. Since gaming has declined to such an extent on the PC, I no longer find myself needing to upgrade my computer to play games.
If and when I buy a new computer, it probably won't be for another 5-10 years, by which point Vista will no doubt be obsolete.
All the so called improvements to Vista not only do not interest me - they actually scare me. God damn if I'm going to buy a new computer to specifically run a new and inferior OS.
Bill Gates and his Microsoft geeks can go and kiss my hairy arse. If I was a shareholder in Microsoft, I would be very worried.
I'm sure they are absolutely terrified of their constantly rising revenues and 25 million copies of Vista sold in a couple months.
Good call.

As long as MS has a virtual monopoly among OS, and a huge portion of the office software, they will continue to do great. Just new machines will be able to keep them making profit.

While Asher can praise Vista all he likes, it's definitely not having awesome sales numbers. I want to see a revolutionary version of Windows already. By that I mean not just some under the hood stuff (Vista does do some of that very well), but all-around revolutionary. Think Windows 95 compared to Windows 3.1.
I have now used Vista myself, and definitely didn't like it overall. On the other hand, I find Office 2007 to be among the very best software I've used .
