  • Vista Sucks?

Dell is offering XP again because so many people say Vista sucks. I guess I shouldn't upgrade .. I checked the site and WOW THEY ADD A SIDEBAR and other mac things. Seem inconsequential. Where am I wrong.

Wiglaf, well, VIsta might have its problems, but it's not like they will go back to developing XP the most, Vista is what they've been commited into, so that' swhat they'll continue to work on.

So when considering about getting XP or Vista right now, I'd say Vista is the only choice, simply because it will be the future of MS OS business for quite some time.

While it may be the future... it's not the present, and won't take over until more businesses adopt it. Many are staying away

Sure, I'm not saying that businesses should be aggressively making changes. But home users won't have much problems, I think one of the main issues is the driver issue with home users right now. But I'd say it's still a safe investment for home users even now, simply because the facts remain, and what is the stuff you can't do right now with it?

Vista is different from XP so if you're looking for Vista to be XP 2.0 then you will be disappointed. Vista is a real memory hog; a hog beyond all reason and the programmers should be lashed daily until they get their bloated code down to size. Also I absolutely HATE Vista's search function as it doesn't seem to actually work much or at least it is far less user friendly then XP's search function.

The biggest complaint is that it is memory hogging bloatware. With just Vista and a couple of other preloads running on my computer it eats up 600 MBs of RAM. I have to GBs of RAM but there is no excuse for this other then the programmers are to lazy to optimize their code. Even the move to a higher bit OS and adding in background features just doesn't seem to justify that type of wasteful memory usage.

The biggest problem right now is poor gaming performance, thanks to crappy video drivers.

Businesses don't spend money until they have to, period. If MS wants to make Vista the standard then they need software which XP can't handle.

Personally I'm not sure if Vista will end up as an XP type upgrade or if it will be the next Windows ME.

Personally, I would never even consider upgrading to a new version of operating system from Microsoft in the first year or so after it's come out... I'm not interested in doing beta testing for Microsoft.

After a year, I may start looking at what people are saying of the new system, and in the unlikely event a year has been enough to fix the problems, I may start considering updating... provided that the new system has something to offer besides eye-candy, that I can use.

XP seems to work fine. Asher keeps saying that Vista is a huge improvement to XP -- whereas ME was just incremental, he says that Vista is the new breed. I just don't get that, since the only noticable improvements seem to be a sidebar that you can already get on XP...and a BS search function and a whole lot of bloat.

No real issues which I have run into so far. It seems rock solid though a more then a bit of bloatware. The search feature needs to have its interface completely redone but other then that it is nice. A lot of it is just different from XP but you can adjust your options to make somethings more like XP/Win98 if you want to.

He is right that the code is entirely different from XP and is a 64 bit vs 32 bit system (meaning over all theoretical performance is much faster as long as you have the hardware to do it and have software written to take advantage of this) plus virtually all the system architectures have been completely redone with fresh sheets of paper though the end user interface is designed to look a lot like XP so that users feel familiar with it. To programmers though the under the hood changes mean a lot. To use users though we don't see a lot of differences even though MS has included a lot of new features. They've just designed those features to be out of the way so that users hardly notice they're being helped in new ways (an example is the real time search which searches as you type).

Not quite. There are several rewritten and new subsystems, but the kernel is an incremental update.

and is a 64 bit vs 32 bit system

Only if you install 64-bit Vista.

                            Vista

I'd never consider going back to XP, so I think it's just a case of people not getting some old software to work and complaining. As pointed out video drivers haven't been optimized for Vista (the nVidia debacle at launch was ridiculous).

Definitely not a Windows ME (especially since it is very, very stable).

You probably should refrain from chastising things until you understand what you're talking about.
