With Vista Premium you get Windows Media Center.

Vista definately isn't an upgrade option and is more for people buying new systems. The requirements are just so high that it doesn't make sense to upgrade.

I'm saying most people won't upgrade and will instead wait until they buy a new computer. I'm not sure what other types of windows MS will be releasing and it is entirely possible people will cling to XP until the next version of Windows comes out unless they feel compelled to buy all new hardware by some killer app.

In any event I already bought and I'm just curious to see what other people do.

When I run into anything that seems beta (or if I get a crash) then I'll let you know .

It uses less CPU than XP does overall thanks to the GPU offloading.

Vista's RAM usage looks higher because when it's not being used, it caches programs in there for quicker loading. People who don't know what they're talking about attribute this to bloat.

Can it run smoothly, with the entire interface completely usable, with 512 MB of RAM?

Why would you want a computer with only 256?

I don't. My machine has a comfortable 2 GB, soon to be upgraded to 4 GB. This is not about me. The point is that a HUGE number of computers in India have 256 MB, sometimes even less. Computers in most governmental institutes have less. Machines in educational institutes have something between 256 and 512.

There are variants of Linux that will run on these machines, and keep them usable. How does Microsoft plan to retain this market?

XP is still being made for the third-world markets like India.
