baby boomers are the government. people of generation Y are too young to hold any position of power that can change the deal. simply electing another boomer boob to pad the wallets isnt going to change the path we are on.

furthermore, you paying for the previous generation DIDNT jeapordize your own future payments. us paying yours WILL jeapordize our future though.

          • That's nice... equating us to child molestors... now that's a good argument

I'm just saying that while your arguments are valid, it was no different for us. We had no say in the matter either.

HUHHHH... they have already started changing the rules so we get less and will not start getting it untill later. My future payments have already been jeapordized, and it's not over yet.

regardless of hyperbole of boomer evilness, I still believe that it doesnt matter if you had a say in the matter or not, you have a choice to change the system, for the benefit of all to come after you.

this could be the boomer legacy, sacrificing now, so that every generation after you can benefit. wouldnt that be better than being the generation that raised spoiled brats out of laziness and ineptitude then screwed everyone and their as payback?

                • I don't see why they shouldn't be entitled to the same benefits as previous generations.

If they are willing to forgo them that is one thing, quite another for us to take them away and say that it is being 'fair'.

It's up to us to convince them that it is in their best interest to decline the payments to keep the system working.

                  • I don't actually think that it will work, for us to pay for the Baby boomers. We just won't make enough money to give them the benefits they were promised.

                    • its simple ben, its less fair to deprive all future generations of something than deprive one generation of a portion of something.

no one is saying that we should forgo ss for boomers. people are saying they should take a smaller portion of ss and restructure it so that every future generation can enjoy the benefit.

                      • That's double speak.

'restructure' is just another word for take money away from them and give it back to younger people.

If the system is unsustainable then it is in the best interests for boomers to forgo the payments. However, it has to be voluntary, not forced. If we can convince them that this is so then everyone is happy.

                        • I'm willing to take less, (as stated many times already)
I planned for it and think I will be OK.
BUT, i don't want to have to wait an extra 10 years to start collecting. I could probably financially handle it but I don't want to work that much longer.

well thats where raising taxes to pay for SS comes in. But the thing that is absurd is that to maintain the same benefit level we would have to increase the tax rate beyond just 5-10%. think about that.

                            • I'm not sure at the figures you are looking there, so I can't really say, but my opinion is that even if it means a hit, it's worthy to keep the deal, as well as the faith that such deals will keep in the future as well. It's a price to pay for faith and one generation worth of a deal.

But, I don't know the figures. I don't know how big of a hit we're talking about.

you dont know what the **** you or I are talking about.

                                on restructuring.
                                1. Restructure it in terms of not what is payed out but by what comes in and how the government uses it.
                                2. adjust the federal budget to decrease outlays to certain programs while increasing money that goes to SS. (or simply stop raiding SS for other government stuff)
                                3. It doesnt have to be voluntary. why should that matter? where in the SS system is there anything else that is voluntary.
