Why not just buy a regular car and then keep a $1000 old beater of a truck for the odd time you have to haul something? That's what my dad did when I was growing up and it worked pretty well.

Yeah, I can't think of any ski hills near you that would need 4wd to reach.
Ya I probably will go to Sunshine most of the time or Louise for variety. Nakiska has a bit more of a challenging winter-time road so I'd probably go there only when the roads are pretty clear anyway (with or without 4WD)

As for ski stuff, you might want to consider a roof carrier, like the ones made by Thule. Better to ride in a van after skiing rather than crammed into a pick-up.
I agree but part of the idea is to leave the van for my wife with the kids. If I switch that idea, I could probably get away from a full double cab and just get the minimum that will accept carseats.

I have thought about the roof carrier idea as well but I would want to get one that is flat enough to fit though our garage door. I just have visions of Mrs Flubber forgetting about it (if it were taller) and ripping the crap out of the roof of the van.

An ok plan too I guess but I really don't know that I want to insure/maintain 3 vehicles. Something to think about I guess. The beater would end up parked on the street summer and winter .. .hmmm- Maybe I'll take a look and see whats available cheap.

If we end up with 3 vehicles, the truck requirements go down to the ability to haul a moderate load of dirt or terrs etc etc. But once we get it down to that level, I'm probably better off all around to rent a truck for a day at a time.
