  • Recommend a truck

Ok-- I have gotten to the point where I am ready to trade in our little beater car and I am thinking that I now want a small to mid-size truck. I am just starting my research ---

    The thinking is as follows

-- We have a minivan which meets our frequent need to transport 6 or 7 people at a time

-- I have 2 fairly significant ( for me) landscaping projects where having my own truck would be majorly convenient-- Hell they charge a fortune just to deliver a tree . . .

-- I have taken up skiing and my car cannot transport even 3 people and ski gear

    -- Trucks are cool

-- Now that we have 2 adults and 2 children, a small car would almost never hold all the stuff we typically carry-- hell a stroller takes the whole trunk.

So I want something that can have two carseats in back or can seat 4 adults comfortably , has decent gas mileage, and can fit in a standard garage (short box options may work well ) . I am mostly thinking about the 4 door models (either separate doors or those half door thingies are ok). Four wheel drive is a consideration but not a necessity (unless I get convinced otherwise)

I don't really need any bells and whistles other than air and manual transmission will be chosen since I don't see the point in paying extra for an automatic and have always liked driving a standard better anyway

It does not need towing capacity on the current plan although it doesn't hurt. NO off-road capability needed

So basically I am thinking of a smaller type truck for beating around town. . . . something that is good as a pick up the kids vehicle but is also functional to pick up a couple cubic metres of crushed stone.... something small enough that its not annoying if you commute in it sometimes

    Any recommendations ??

I have been tempted to subscribe to consumer reports and may do that but if anyone has any good links or leads to start me out .. . . that would be great. IN a few hours I'll start looking for a good truck forum but if someone knows such a place offhand that would be wonderful

I don't know that I want anything called a "Titan"-- I just checked their website and their "Frontier" might be an option. Toyota?? I have seen Tundras and they are bigger than I want. I may look at a "Tacoma" though-- I need to read up on them though

                    This might help.

The Toyota is nice but it's $10k more then the domestics. I'm not a big fan of trucks but the Chevy Silverado is a nice truck and the drive train is as bullet proof as can be.

Mostly because they can, Asher. You're paying for the Toyota name. Like I said the Toyota is a nice truck but trucks are supposed to be used and abused so why spend $10k more? Unless of course you just want a big truck to drive to the mall and back then I guess the Toyota's small bed & payload along with least ground clearance won't matter.

Thanks oerdin-- It had a link to more "compact trucks" that is very helpful. Even the compact trucks come with bigger cabs so I think that might be the class I am looking for

OK, if you're looking at a compact truck then the Toyota is the truck to get hands down. The domestics don't make decent small trucks.

Not the mall and back but to the gardening store to pick up paving bricks or dirt, or crushed stone or trees. Then in the winter to the ski hill carrying 4 guys and associated ski gear
