You have to draw your own lines, by increments.
My first was no drinking before noon. Then 7 p.m. Then a limit of 4 beers and no hard liquor was the goal. Whatever gets you where you want to be. That's just my thoughts. How I handled it.
If you can't draw lines, then it's cold turkey.
Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

Drinking in moderation is explained by police officers to car drivers. If you are caught with 0.5 gramme of alcool by liter of blood, you loose 3 point out of 12 on your licence.

For an average adult, this limit represents less than 25 centiliters of a 12°wine or less than 50 cl of a 6° beer.
This rule has seriously reduced the consumption of wine in restaurants.
          Statistical anomaly.

Singapore has definitely curbed my drinking; alcohol is about twice as expensive here as it is in the US (I can get a some booze duty free through the embassy commissary, but the selection, especially of wine, is pitiful).

I rarely drink more than 2 drinks/night, and rarely more than 3-4 times/week. During the week I'll occassionally have a nightcap (scotch, usually); on weekends, I tend to have 1-2 glasses of beer or wine with dinner if I'm dining out (beer with Asian/Indian food, wine with Western fare).

A bottle of wine contains generally 75 cl (only very ordinary wines are in one litre - or 100 cl - bottles); therefore, the limit is, for a 12° wine about one third.

Now, is one third of a bottle a real unit?

I can't speak to whether alcohol has the ultimate effect you claim (shrinking cells), but lyse means for a cell to be destroyed, not shrunk. Lysing is the process under which cell death occurs, either voluntarily (autolysis) or not, and refers to the cell 'popping' open and spilling out its innards.

If what you say (the end result) is true, then I think it's more likely that alcohol dehydrates your cells (though I don't know that this is true), which would then cause them to shrink as you say. Or, perhaps the lysing is what helps, in that older cells are destroyed and newer cells grow in to take their place.

Wow, europe has much more lenient DWI/DUI laws than the US.

If in the US you are caught with 0.06-0.08 BAC (%g/ml, which would be 0.6-0.8 g/l) typically you would go to jail...

Edit: Upon researching my BAC units in wiki, I notice that France actually has much more serious penalties for DUI/DWI, just over 0.08. I like the progressive penalty idea... makes more sense than the US's 0.07 = sober, drive happily, 0.08 = drunk, jail/suspended license ...

In Norway you can't drive if you have more than 0.2 [get up his dictionary] blodet] excessive blood-alcohol level per thousand. Which means in reality you can't drink at all if you want to drive.

The French should cut themselves some slack. If I was French, I'd turn to alcohol, too.

A problem drinker is, more often than not, a person who has deeper problems and who escapes in alcohol. Most addictions (contrary to moderate substance-use, or binge substance use that one can get out of) come from deeper personal problems, and the substance abuse is mostly a symptom.

Now, there are some substances which are physically addictive by themselves. But the physical addiction in alcohol isn't that bad.
