The benefits of red wine are present in (red) grape juice as well.

I've hear it repeated often enough on telly, in health-related programs. Apparently, it has been found by doctors.

Edit: found something recent. From Le Monde, 1st/03/2007

A dutch team has surveyed 1373 people born between 1900 and 1920 (the survey had been occuring between 1960 and 2000).
They noticed that those who drank moderately everyday had a life expectancy 3.8 years longer than the others on average. Red wine is particularly good in this regard, because not only does it have the good aspects of alcohol (when drank moderately), it has also specific components that are good for health. Wine-drinkers have, on average, a life expectance longer by 2 years over those who drink another form of alcohol.

The scientists advise one to two glasses of alcohol, preferably red wine, a day.

This study confirms something that is already widely known in France, because any such study tends to get publicity over here

4 beers a night, regular as clockwork.

A couple of glasses of wine to dinner in the weekends, and possibly a drink or two later in the evening. Other than that, an occational beer with a friend. Something like that.

If you drink 1-4 per day then you are a moderate drinker. The US has lower guidelines which are mostly politically/religiously motivated instead of scientifically determined. Most of the European countries consider anything under five to be moderate where as the US considers anything more then two per day to be binge drinking.

It's just another example of politics & religious conservatives stifling scientists in the US.

                      I'm a moderate drinker, because if I'm a light drinker then I'm a lightweight but if I'm a heavy drinker then I'm a alcoholic.

BTW my understanding is besides the various compounds found in alcoholic drinks besides alcohol (flavinols, etc), which have their own positive health effects, there is also the positive health effect of alcohol itself. Namely, that alcohol helps to prevent harding of the arteries. Alcohol dehydrates you and causes all your cells to shrink, that is lise, and causes a slight drop in blood pressure along with a moderate thinning of the blood. The shrinking and re-expanding of cells & arteries helps prevent them from harding while the slight drop in blood pressure other effects are also positive to preventing heart attacks.

I have an occasional beer -- maybe a six-pack every 2 weeks -- plus the occasional glass or two of wine with dinner. On my once-weekly party night (Fridays), I rarely have more than three beers.

Hard liquor? Hardly ever. Usually just one, and only on social occasions like business dinners or holidays.
