You should make them sign a contract and mail it in. Have them photocopy or scan a picture ID too. That way if they **** anything up with the site you've got them.

That is what we do with all our tech volunteers. They understand the importance of it and haven't minded doing it.

    • yeah but what repucerssions would they face if they vandalized the site? none.

If the site were designed in such a way they would only have access to small areas, it would be nice. But I don't know if that is technically feasible. It would require an entire redesign.

      • Other than legal difficulties (Apolyton isn't a legal entity you can sign a contract with), I think that would discourage people from signing up. I've been on the staff for 6 years now, but I might not have joined if I needed a contract for it.

Basically, people on sites like this won't do stuff they feel is really unfun. And contracts have that nasty habit of making things appear like boring work, not fun.

Well, that's true to an extent. Someone responsible for, say, news posting only can't screw up any more than that. However, when you bring in people to help with the backend code or to maintain the server or to completely re-design the site, you pretty much have to give them full or nearly full access.

Civilization is still just a game that's meant to be fun. And Apolyton is not an end, but a means.

How many mods are there anyways?

                • Been on vacation and just saw this thread. Quite entertaining and I do agree that some improvements need to be done and I hope we move in that direction.

I have read a couple of things repeatedly that I would like to comment on.

I have read that I'm listed as a mod for civIV. Where is this listed? I haven't been able to find it. Granted I have mod capabilities over all the forum (at least in all that I've tried) but have yet to see my name listed in the CIV IV forums.

I have probably hosted more CIV II MP games (non duels) then anyone ever. Still active in the II community and post in almost every thead when it refers to strat or general discussions.

For CIV IV, I plan on having the same record. I've already probably hosted more MP games (non duels) than anybody here and try to post in every thread in the general or strat forums where I feel I can contribute.
We've already had over 30 different players join our saturday night game and the number keeps going up. There are usually 6 - 12 players every week. The MP game is thriving for us. The AUSSIES also have a thriving dipolmacy sytle game and post in volumes about it.

So while I think we need more participation, it's not from lack of effort on the mods parts (even those that aren't listed)

And yes, I've cut back on weekend posting due to playing too much civ.
It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

                    • I never visit the CivFanatics forums. Do they have as many long time posters getting driven off in disgust like we have had with Serb and Ned recently?

He is still lurking you know.

We have to find a way to get him to request an end to his ridiculous self imposed ban.

                          • Ned is gone? I seem to have seen him posting a few days ago.

Serb is gone for good. He may or may not lurk, I personally doubt it. Don't overestimate the appeal of Apolyton. It is not the Alpha and Omega, it is one of many many forums in the internet. Why would one like him spend his time to lurk here and resist the urge to post all the time, if he can freely post and discuss in other forums not packed with russophobic character assassins like this one?

But the truth of the matter is that I never lie. I have made factual mistakes before; but they were unintentional.

But what irks me most about the so many people here on this forum is their complete lack of civility. When they disagree with your point of view, they will go out of their way to be rude and obnoxious in the extreme, and will NEVER apologize when they are proven wrong.

There are a few on this forum I actually enjoy discussing things with, but the I find the majority of folks here to be, frankly, immature in the extreme.

Goodbye to those of you on this forum who are decent chaps.

To the rest of you creeps, go F yourselves.

Serb sent me a message explaining that he has time to lurk but doesn't have time to personally battle all of the ignorance about Russia that he sees on poly. So he has no plans to post here again even though he's still visiting and reading the threads.

How are Iranians going to respect the Brits now? They have nothing to fear and everything to gain from piratical behavior.
