Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?

I only know the first two lines of ours. Actually, that puts me on average, I assume.

Let me paraphrase from "DTV Atlas der deutschen Sprache":
The word deutsch firs appeared in 786 its latin form in a report of two synodes in England. There the decisions were made public "latine et theodisce". At that time, even English was "german" - there wasn't a high level Germanic language (such as modern German) and dialects varied (and still vary today) nearly continuously between villages.
Why doing it the easy way if it is possible to do it complicated?

At the time of Willem the Silent, there wasn't a big distinction between so-called "Dutch" and "Germans". Since there was no Germany (only the Holy Roman Empire), people identified themselves by their local province, eg. Netherlanders.

Oh, and "Deutsch" cognates into English as both "Dutch" and "Teuton."
