I'm glad somebody brought that up.

Zkribbler, if that's what you're hearing on Air America, it's no wonder they're going bankrupt.

    - The attack happened toward the end of his second term, which under NYC law is the final term for mayor. He supported the current mayor's election.

    - Giuliani and Donna Hanover ceased being a couple long before they divorced. Here is a report of the seperation annoucement, which also touches on several other points in this thread: http://archives.cnn.com/2000/ALLPOLI...age/index.html

    - "anything" is a mighty broad category, and given the other two claims, I'd really have to see who the "numerous people" were.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

I actually expect Republicans to take Guiliani. They have shown their preferences for evil compared to spineless numerous times.

we seem to want to believe that, in the end, they're really just regular joes from some small town in the Midwest

Regular joes from small towns in the Midwest are the best people on this earth.

Americans certainly seem to think so, at least when it comes to electing presidents; it took the assassination of McKinley to get a New Yorker into the presidency, and TR was our our one-and-only city-bred chief executive.

NYC born and bred. East side -- Turtle Bay area (East 30s), I think.

Edit: Nope, Wiki says E. 20th St. I think that's Gramercy Park, but I can't recall.

FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt were both named Roosevelt before they got married. Ewww...

                      edit:
Theodore Roosevelt approved as well and sent Franklin a letter and after the wedding ceremony told him "Well Franklin, there's nothing like keeping the name in the family."

Well, IIRC, they were fifth cousins, which means they had a great-great-great-great-grandfather in common (and he would have been a contemporary of Isaac Newton, just to give you a sense of how far back we're going). That's a pretty far cry from Arkansas-style sister-lovin'.

Just going based upon what I have heard of his strong arm tactics. I sort of think maybe a competent strong-arm would be better than our current... but then I think of how much more damage a competent strongarm could do.

If he had NYC police groups spy/etc on his 'enemies', what would he do as the executive of the US, with very limited oversight from the judicial or legistlative branches?

Ah, but you are forgetting that American politics these days is more about turning out your base. A Republican nominee who has stances not popular with his base could be a disaster, especially if the person on the other side CAN turn out his or her base.

To be fair, I'd imagine Guiliani has a lower approval rating in NYC than in the rest of the country. Bloomberg is far more popular, IIRC.
